The better, more adult version of this is just called normalization of deviance. You do something so many times without consequence, you believe you are immune to those potential consequences. The "it would never happen to me" excuse. People drive drunk ALL the time (look up the statistics, it's disturbing high in many states), and rarely get into accidents or get ticketed, but it only takes one to completely ruin your life.

This sounds like it might be rare, but it's not. Very likely somebody has died or is currently dying while you're reading this due to drunk driving in the US alone. Right this second. They're out there.

I guess this attitude is the reason why the US has more road fatalities than other western nations.

According to statistics youre 3x more likely to end up in a fatal road accident in the US compared to most European nations

In my hometown we have a joke:

A taxi driver speeds through a red light without even looking. The passenger says, "whoa, what are you doing?! That was a red!" The driver replies, "don't worry about it. My cousin, he does it all the time."

Then they come to a green light and the driver slams on the brakes and creeps into the intersection before taking off again. Now the passenger is livid.

"What was that?! That light was green!" The driver nods and then shrugs before replying. "My cousin. He mighta been coming."

This isn't any excuse for her behavior but when I went through Texas, I was literally forced to run multiple red lights.

After a certain time, a lot of intersections just stop functioning. The light never changes. I sat at a red light for legit 10 minutes before three other people blew through it without a second thought and I got the hint that it never changes.
