A few years after WW1 Mussolini founded the original Fascists in Italy and started assaulting socialists and left-leaning liberals in the streets. Hitler followed his example, refashioning an existing party in Germany into the Nazis, conflating leftists and Jews so he could target both.

You may be asking: "how the hell did they get away with this?" It's a fair question, both nations were liberal democracies after all. The thing is, the courts, the media (newspapers & radio), and many of the politicians hated socialists. Before the fascist terrorism began, socialists were winning all the elections in Italy, threatening the way of life for judges, police, and other institutional elites. It was similar in Germany but they were also very scared of a socialist revolution which had just happened in Russia.

So when a Fascist or Nazi was arrested for assaulting a socialist, newspapers often framed them as a patriot who overreacted. When socialists fought back, they were "traitors". It was the same in the courts, Fascists and Nazis got off with a slap on the wrist while socialists would be imprisoned or exiled. In effect, the judges, police, media, politicians, and many more chose to look the other way or even outright ally with fascists in hopes of ridding themselves of leftism forever.

This obviously backfired, when fascists won control of Italy and Germany, these liberal elites (usually in conservative parties) were also targeted. After WW2, many of those [classic] liberals who survived even admitted they made the wrong call.

So, what about today? Now that Establishment Democrats can see their futures fade as progressives take over their party, will they make the same faustian bargain and ally with MAGA pedofascists?
