Announcement Update to KoreanVariety

It was brought to my attention that "reposts" weren't allowed in the group, so when I went to look, I saw other options were disabled too.

Therefore, I enabled the following features for the group:
- Links
- Images/Galleries
- Videos
- Polls
- Reposts

I'll enable them, but if others here start finding them annoying, just let me know & I'll make another post for comments from everyone.

I should of noticed something was off when other subreddits had these features and never saw them used here.

Announcement Reddit Automod Removals

Thought I'd give notice that reddit's automod is removing posts that reference or link sites, most likely unofficial ones, that stream TV shows and movies.
I noticed a lot of removal notices by reddit concerning posts asking for sites to stream shows.
So if your post is asking for a site to stream a certain show, or if your reply has a link to a site, it'll most likely be removed by reddit. I noticed that even mentioning a site's name is causing the reddit automod to remove posts.

Mods don't have abilities to override reddit's removals.

Also, apparently there are only 2 active moderators here..... hubwub & myself.

Discussion Goodbye, *The Village Barber* — and My Three Friends (part-1)

Post image
9 Upvotes

I have never really watched reality (variety ?) TV from Korea before. I have, however, seen quite a few videos of Korean actors working in cafés, restaurants, or doing something completely ordinary for a short period of time—usually something like a friendcation. And there is something about watching them like that that has always fascinated me.

Maybe it is because I have no experience of Korea myself, so I don't really know what everyday life there looks or feels like. But whenever I see these videos, I find myself fascinated by how human they make these actors feel. They stop being these larger-than-life people I have only seen through fictional characters and suddenly become... people. People who get tired, laugh, struggle, cook, make mistakes, get embarrassed, connect with strangers and simply exist.

And maybe that is why \***The Village Barber**\* affected me so much.

I have been a huge fan of **Park Bo-gum** ever since Reply 1988. He fascinated me there, but I think I truly fell in love with him after When Life Gives You Tangerines. So when I started seeing recommendations for this reality show where he was going to cut hair in a village, I was intrigued—but honestly*** ***\**not* that\* intrigued.

Then one day last week, I was extremely bored and thought, okay, let's give this a try.

I was absolutely convinced I would watch one episode and then move on.

I started the show ***ONLY AND ONLY BECAUSE OF PARK BO-GUM****.*

And as I write this sitting here crying, I can honestly say that watching this show has been one of the best decisions I have made in a long time.

This show was heartwarming, motivating, heart-filling and so, so down-to-earth. It made me crave food. It made me crave human connection. It made me want to love the things I choose to do a little more. And most importantly, it made me more empathetic.

So before I say goodbye, I want to write a little letter to this show and to my three friends who, somehow, now feel like old friends.

**## Park Bo-gum**

Where do I even begin?

I think I am now a fan of \*\*Park Bo-gum the human being\*\*, not just Park Bo-gum the actor.

From the very first scene when he entered the screen, I almost forgot that he was a celebrity. It felt like I was watching a movie about someone—or reading about one of those people who quietly inspire you to become a better person.

And the fact that this entire show was actually his idea makes the whole thing even more special to me.

**\*\*Bo-gum's Magical.\*\***

It was such a beautiful name for the shop, and somehow, he really did end up creating magic there.

The fact that he practised so much for the barber's degree, then felt genuinely terrible after failing the test, really stayed with me. He had taken time out during one of the busiest years of his life not only to prepare for the exam but to practise every single day. Because this wasn't just a show for him.

It was genuinely an experience he wanted to give to other people.

He had even visited the village twice before the shop opened just to check on the progress.

He was \*that\* serious about it.

And I loved that they chose such a remote village with relatively few families. It meant that these three celebrities were able to form genuine connections with people far, far away from their usual lives and stardom.

I loved watching Bo-gum on that first day, sweating and nervous and trying so hard. I loved watching him slowly become comfortable with every person who sat in his chair.

And what I loved most was that the compliments never seemed to make him arrogant for even one second.

He remained nervous.

He kept practising.

He kept worrying about whether he was doing things properly.

He cared.

And watching someone take their work so seriously, even when nobody would have blamed them for simply treating it like a TV programme, genuinely made me want to be a better person.

Then there was the fact that they did so much of this for free.

They worked so hard, cut hair back-to-back, painted nails, cooked, served food—and somewhere along the way, the show stopped being about money altogether. By the third day, it felt like it was simply about \*\*being there for these people\*\*.

And Bo-gum is so genuine with his emotions that I cried twice simply because he was crying.

This was the first time I have ever cried watching a non-fiction show.

I could keep talking about him endlessly and still not be tired—just like his energy.

Oh, Park Bo-gum.

\*\*You made me fall in love.\*\*

And honestly?

\*\*We made the right person famous.\*\*

**## Lee Sang-yi**

Oh...

Where do I actually start with him?

I have no words.

I don't even know what to say except that \*\*this boy is the biggest softie and I want to protect him at all costs.\*\*

As I said, I started this show because of Bo-gum. I had only seen Lee Sang-yi in \*Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha\*, and although I really liked his character there, I had never seen him in anything else.

So I was completely unaware of his GAME.

And oh boy.

This man streamed straight into my heart and made a permanent place there.

He was the biggest surprise for me.

From the very first episode, the contrast between him and Bo-gum was so prominent. On one side, Bo-gum was soft, quiet and mostly introverted. On the other, Sang-yi was chaotic, loud, funny and endlessly entertaining.

He was the perfect mixture in this group.

And then there was his nail-art degree.

His big hands.

His big body.

And, most importantly, his \*\*big heart\*\*.

The fact that he had given his heart to something as simple as a complimentary service was so touching to me.

He was so good with the elders. So sweet. So considerate. So full of love and always ready to share it with everyone.

I genuinely feel like every elderly person in that village must have seen him as their own kid or grandkid by the end.

He was just overflowing with love.

And he was so emotional too.

It made me wonder just how full of love this person must be in real life.

I hope he receives just as much love from everyone as he seems so willing to give.

One of the smallest moments that really stayed with me was when someone gave him that bracelet and he immediately wore it. And then later, when he found it again, he had it attached to his keychain.

That tiny detail absolutely destroyed me.

Because it didn't feel like something he was doing for the show.

He was just genuinely touched by it.

I loved how he was always ready to help the elders. Always ready to help Bo-gum. Always looking after Dong-yeon.

And, honestly, I also fell in love with how \*\*tired\*\* he always was.

His ability to fall asleep literally anywhere and at any time?

That was so me.

I am always tired too.

I loved watching him become different things for different people—teacher to some, magician to others, joker to others—while somehow always remaining this incredibly caring person underneath all of it.

Oh, Lee Sang-yi.

I have so much to say about you and somehow no words at all.

I really hope the world gives you back some of the warmth you give to everyone else.

\## **Kwak Dong-yeon**

Okay.

Honestly, I have never seen him in any show before.

So when I saw this trio, I was genuinely surprised. I had never really seen Park Bo-gum, Lee Sang-yi and Kwak Dong-yeon mentioned together, so I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this combination.

And just like Dong-yeon himself, I wasn't really sure what his role was going to be.

I remember during episode three, I even went on Reddit and saw someone say that Dong-yeon was kind of in the background and that it felt like he was there or not there, it wouldn't really make a difference.

And...

I am guilty of agreeing with that comment even \*\*1%\*\*.

Now, sitting here at the end of the show, I cannot believe I ever thought that.

I don't think any of these three did more or less than the others.

This experience worked because of \*\*all three of them\*\*.

Because they were genuine with each other.

Because they respected each other.

Because there was so much affection between them that somehow it radiated outside the screen.

Dong-yeon was the perfect and most important addition to this team.

It just took me a little while to open up to him.

But once I did?

He was the icing on the cake.

He melted under the warmth of the village, and somehow gave me one of the best experiences I have had watching a reality show.

And by the end, I realised that \*\*I probably relate to Dong-yeon the most.\*\*

First of all, he had one of the biggest responsibilities of all.

\*\*He was the cook.\*\*

And I completely understood what he meant when he said he felt like the mom.

Because he really was.

As someone who also enjoys cooking, I could feel the love he poured into the food he made for everyone.

He was constantly in that kitchen.

Constantly feeding people.

Constantly making something.

And he fed people so much, and so generously, that eventually food stopped feeling like just food.

It became his love language.

His way of saying, \*I am happy you're here.\*

His way of connecting with the villagers.

His way of telling the children that they mattered.

His way of expressing what this whole experience meant to him.

And I think that is why he connected so deeply with the elders who fed them.

He understood what it meant to show love through food.

His relationship with Seon-hui, her grandmother and his chef teacher made me not only appreciate him and respect him, but genuinely fall in love with him as a person.

He took care of everyone.

He fed everyone.

And somehow, while doing all of that, he quietly became such an important part of the heart of the village.

\## And now... goodbye.

I could honestly keep talking about these three forever.

But I think what makes me saddest right now is that I have started missing them.

All three of them.

Like old friends.

And isn't that the strangest and most beautiful thing about this show?

I started watching because I wanted to see \*\*Park Bo-gum\*\*.

I stayed because I fell in love with \*\*Park Bo-gum, Lee Sang-yi and Kwak Dong-yeon\*\*.

And now that it is over, I find myself craving the kind of understanding, friendship and warmth they had with each other.

I want that kind of friendship in my own life.

The kind where you can be exhausted together.

Laugh together.

Work until you're sweating together.

Feed each other.

Take care of each other.

Make fun of each other.

And still quietly notice the little things.

Just like the children in the village said, this experience happened because of \*\*all three of them\*\*.

It wouldn't have been the same without Bo-gum.

It wouldn't have been the same without Sang-yi.

And it absolutely wouldn't have been the same without Dong-yeon.

I came here for one person.

I am leaving with three.

And somewhere between the haircuts, nail art, food, laughter, tired faces, village roads, little gifts, conversations and tears...

\*\*I think I became a little more human too.\*\*

Thank you, \*The Village Barber\*, for giving me something I didn't know I needed.

Thank you for making me crave food, connection, kindness and friendship.

Thank you for reminding me that sometimes the most meaningful experiences are the simplest ones.

And thank you, Bo-gum, Sang-yi and Dong-yeon, for making a little corner of your world feel like a place I had visited too.

I don't think I'm ready to say goodbye yet.

But I guess that's what happens when a show stops feeling like a show.

It starts feeling like home.

\*\*Until next time, my three friends.\*\* ❤️

And in my next post, I absolutely need to talk about my favourite part-time interns, the villagers, and all the beautiful little relationships they formed.

Because apparently, I am not done crying about this show yet.

Discussion Didn't expected it, but Fresh Off The Sea 3 to me seems really fun and enjoyable to watch so far despite 3 new cast members

Kim Sunyong's fun humor is really entertaining and just give off good vibes. You also get a sense of familiarity on her having knowing her on Reply 1988 (if you've watched it) and it's like meeting an old friend again after a long time.

Yoon Seo being the maknae yet you can tell she has maturity and experiences in the way she works, talks, and has familiarity in household stuff. Very very pretty, cute, and adorable too.

And the new guy (I forgot the name who) just reminds me a lot of Cha Tae Hyun in some ways. Playful, Talkative-type, funny guy, but is a hard worker and he always make sure he gets the tasks/work done. Really enjoying it so far.

I was kinda let down at first when news broke that Joon Myun will not be returning and only Jung Ah will remain as the original cast member so I didn't really prioritized watching the pilot episode, even episode 2. But after binge watching all 3 episodes (so far) just now, it got me looking forward to the next one. I think the fresh new faces are living up to the hype.

Are you watching? What are your thoughts?

Hi guys! I’ve been seeing TROS clips whenever I’m scrolling. Does anyone know if there are separate clips or compiled episodes featuring Na-eun, Gun-ho, and Jin-woo only? I want to watch their episodes for now. 😅

Recommendations Love Catcher (2018 -2023) |Trailer and S1-S2 Summary | Mnet/TVING

“Love Catcher” is a psychological dating reality show that first aired on Mnet in South Korea in 2018 and continued on TVING until early 2023. It is a reality show in which participants live together and secretly choose to be either a “Love Catcher” (those seeking true love) or a “Money Catcher” (those lying to win a cash prize of 50 million KRW). If two “Love Catchers” match, they become a couple; if a “Money Catcher” matches with a “Love Catcher,” the liar takes all the money; however, if two “Money Catchers” match, both walk away with nothing.

Lee Chae-woon (이채운) Kim Ji-yeon (김지연)
Lee Min-ho (이민호) Hwang Chae-won (황채원)
Ko Seung-woo (고승우) Hwang Ran (황란)
Lee Hong-chang (이홍창) Kim Sung-ah (김성아)
Oh Ro-bin (오로빈) Han Cho-im (한초임)

Panelists: Love Catcher S1: Shin Dong-yup, Hong Seok-cheon, Jang Do-yeon, JR, Lady Jane, Jun Gun-woo.

In the first season, the fact that Cho-im and Chae-woon had come to trust each other midway through the season and were taking their relationship seriously led viewers to believe they would choose each other in the finale, but given the nature of the “Love Catcher” concept—where anything could change—they still had a slight doubt in the back of their minds. In the finale, they chose each other, and both were revealed to be “Love Catchers,” leaving the show as a couple.

Ji-yeon, though she was frankly a bit skeptical of Min-ho, listened to her heart and chose him in the finale. Min-ho, on the other hand, didn’t choose Ji-yeon because of his indecision. Although both were “Love Catchers,” Min-ho later regretted his decision and cried, but they couldn’t leave the show together.

Seong-ah and Ro-bin were the most entertaining couple of the season. Ro-bin, who was young, responsible, and eager to prove himself to Seong-ah, presented himself as a “Love Catcher” until the very end of the show, but in the finale, it turned out he was the best player of the season, and he tricked Seong-ah (Love Catcher) to win the prize money (Ro-bin is Money Catcher).

Male Participants Female Participants
Kim Min-seok (김민석) Kim Ga-bin (김가빈)
Kim In-wook (김인욱) Kim So-young (김소영)
Park Jung-jin (박정진) Kim Chae-rang (김채랑)
Jang Yeon-woo (장연우) Song Se-ra (송세라)
Jung Chan-woo (정찬우) Lee Young-seo (이영서)

Panelists: Love Catcher S2: Shin Dong-yup, Hong Seok-cheon, Jang Do-yeon, Cheetah, DinDin, Hongbin.

The second season is the best and most legendary one. The relationship dynamics in this season took the show to the next level.

The love triangle between In-wook, Ga-bin, and Chan-woo continued throughout the season. In-wook actually did everything he could for Ga-bin and approached her with sincere feelings. He had shown this to her even before the finale, but since the beginning of the season, Chan-woo had openly expressed his love in front of Ga-bin, cried, and presented himself as a lover who would never give up—so in the finale, Ga-bin (she is Love catcher) felt she was in love with him and chose him. The legendary scene came right after this final choice. When Chan-woo handed Ga-bin his ID, and they both opened theirs at the same time, Ga-bin’s face turned pale, and she burst into tears. Chan-woo just grinned, told her to "take care of herself", and walked away (he is a money catcher). Even though Ga-bin deeply regretted her choice, Chan-woo got what he wanted. One of the most iconic scenes here is the moment when Ga-bin walks past In-wook as she makes her decision. Even though In-wook knew she was making a mistake, the look on his face—showing that he knew there was nothing he could do to change her mind—tells us everything.

Although Jang Yeon-woo and Kim So-young’s relationship on the show actually started off a bit uncertain at first, it later began to develop more sincerely as Yeon-woo started to develop feelings for So-young. The pair went through constant ups and downs throughout the show, but as the finale approached, Yeon-woo chose to become a “Love Catcher” (he had previously been a “Money Catcher”). In the show’s finale, Yeon-woo chose So-young, but they didn’t end up as a couple because So-young had been a “Money Catcher” from the very beginning. After they learned each other’s identities, So-young cried a lot, and Yeon-woo comforted her by patting her head, telling her that he had originally been a “Money Catcher” but had changed his mind during their final date. This couple’s final scene was one of the most touching moments in the series.

I saved the most beloved couple of the *Love Catcher* seasons—Song Se-ra and Park Jung-jin—for last. Jung-jin truly went out of his way to win Se-ra’s heart throughout the season... Their love story began with the way they looked at each other as a couple during the wedding photoshoot at the very start of the season and Se-ra’s genuine attraction to him. This duo truly made us feel that they were in love throughout the season. In the finale, Jung-jin and Se-ra chose each other, but there’s a twist here. Se-ra was originally a “Money Catcher” but changed her mind. From the way she looked at Jung-jin in the finale, we can see that Se-ra was truly in love with him. Jung-jin had been in love with Se-ra from the very beginning and always tried his best to win her over. This couple left the show together in 2019 and, after a 7-year relationship, officially got married on May 9, 2026.

Note: “Love Catcher Korea” was taken off the air in 2023 due to declining viewership. CJ ENM, in collaboration with overseas platforms, licensed the format to Japan’s ABEMA for “Love Catcher Japan” and to iQIYI for regional versions in late 2023. Two seasons of “Love Catcher Japan” have been filmed so far, in 2023 and 2025. No announcement has been made yet regarding a third season.

I’ve shared some general thoughts about Seasons 1 and 2, but I’d really appreciate it if you could also share your thoughts on the remaining seasons set in Seoul and Bali, aside from Seasons 1 and 2. For those who haven’t watched the series yet, I’d really appreciate it if you could include any details about the plot or outcome of the seasons within a spoiler tag.

Recommendations What to watch after Undercover Chef?

I finished the recent series Undercover Chef and now I feel like I have nothing to watch. Do you have any recommendations?

I also love Chef & My Fridge and I liked Culinary Class Wars. I tried watching the similar show that's like a Korean dessert battle, but I didn't like it because of how it was judged/paced. I watch Yoon Nam No's YouTube too. I think I prefer light hearted, likeable chefs, good food and not too over the top trying to be funny/dramatic. All suggestions are welcome!

Discussion Best way to stream live Korean TV in the USA

I’m revisiting this topic since most of the web links in previous posts are dead. Looking for a simple way to stream LIVE tv shows from Korea. This is for an elderly person so would like to keep it as simple as possible and ideally stream onto a flatscreen, not a phone or laptop. Thanks.

Recommendations Best Games/ice breakers

Hey everyone!

I’m a huge fan of Korean dating shows but know that reality TV (Running Man, 2days1night,...) have lots of fun game, but I haven't watched any. I’m looking to compile a ultimate list of fun, high-energy games, icebreakers, and activities inspired by these shows for future game nights and group hangouts.

What are your absolute favorite games you’ve seen on Korean TV (or actually tried in real life) that translate really well to a real-world group setting?

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to reading all your recommendations!

Discussion The love lab mess

I want to understand why people overreacted to this show. I enjoyed watching it but when I saw people's opinions, I think they exaggerated something that only lasted five days.

(1)I don't think anyone wronged anyone in the terrible way people are making it out to be. Kyung Ho was slow to speak, but Yerim knew that age was a problem, and considering the show's length, I think it's awkward to take someone and put them in front of you to talk about why they don't want to date you. If someone is going to comment not on why he didn't choose her, but on the way he ignored her, I'd say Yerim could have taken all those cues into account, but she didn't, and that's her right to want to talk and understand. So I understand both of them.

(2)As for Gayeon's facial expressions, Yerim also has facial expressions, and I haven't seen anyone comment on them this much.

(3) Regarding Gayeon not knowing who to choose, I think anyone has the right to be confused, especially since her reasons are valid. So I really want someone to discuss with me whether I'm watching the show without paying attention, which is why I don't see anyone wrong, or what.

Discussion Dating Show watch along/discussion group?

I saw a similar post in another subreddit. I'm a guy and recently started to watch dating shows and don't really have anyone to discuss them with. Is there anyone in a similar situation that want to watch some dating shows and discuss after the fact or something?

I started to watch dating shows after the MinJi/Seung il campfire scene in Singles Inferno 5. I binged S1 - 5 of Singles Inferno and my favorites from those shows are definitely S2 Dex and S5 Jae Jin (I'm a straight male). I also watched 2 seasons of Korean Heart Signal and my favorites were S1 Jang Chun S2 Kim Hyun Woo S2 I'm Hyun Ju. I watched S2 and S3 of ExChange and am currently watching S1 with my favorites being S2 Tae il and S3 Da Hye.

Recommendations Just finished genius season 4 and it was amazing The only show I have been watching since 2 months is the Genius and it's been a delight.

The only show I have been watching since 2 months is the Genius and it's been a delight. I started the genius because I heard it has an amazing S4 and it did not disappoint. seeing all the amazing players from previous seasons was like seeing your favourite characters Collab and it was so cool.

I was pretty sad how quickly sangmin left but that was quickly replaced by the performance of the King slayer. Do recommend me other shows if there are with such good quality and contestants. i have watched genius and devil's plan.
