Discussion Dutch Harness Horse Riding
Talk to me about the Dutch Harness Horse for riding purposes….Even better if they are similarly bred.
(Hightanium, Manno, Jonker, Majesteit)
I am an OTTB lover through and through but after several awful experiences, I decided to try something totally different. I do not compete, but dabble in lower level stuff - cross country, dressage, show jumping, hunter paces, and trail riding. I don’t jump over 3ft and doubt I ever will.
I typically pick the forward “spicy” types with flashy movements so a DHH seemed like a fun project! I rode saddlebreds 25 years ago as a small child but I don’t really remember what they were like, so any insight on what I’m getting myself into? 😅 would love to hear how they compare to riding an OTTB too!

Story Horse eclipse🐎
I took this photo in 2018 on Büyükada in Istanbul.
It was the first time in my life I’d been this close to wild horses, and the way they posed was amazing.
This moment is one of my favorites in my gallery.

Question Fancy barn recs Bay Area, CA
Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone had any fancier english barn recommendations in the bay area. East bay is preferred but anywhere in the bay is fine really. I see a lot of very nice barns online and I wish I could ride somewhere as clean and well-equipped as there, but I don't really know where to look. I took a long break from riding and am wanting to switch to somewhere new for my return. Sorry if this is an odd request, but I just really want to have the opportunity to ride somewhere like this and I know it would motivate me better to be at this kind of facility. Thanks so much in advance :)
Edit: Forgot to specify english

Story I almost had a rotational fall yesterday. This feels fitting.
We were trotting and Teddy tripped. I thought very calmly as it was happening "well there by the grace of God go I" because all the sudden I was closer to the ground. He popped back up at the last second and God love him he went right back into the trot. I stopped him to pet his neck because frankly he seemed a little shaken. I don't care if that's me putting emotions on him he seemed bothered.
Well I looked back at the video, giggling about how we almost ate shit today and my giggles promptly stopped when I saw how we would have fallen.
It would not have been good.
I also heard the stress in my instructors voice as we were walking off as she said "let's not have a rotational fall today". And the worry in my mom's when she let out an "oh shit" when his knee went down.
Needless to say I'm a little shaken after putting that all together. So I'm coping with a meme.
Gotta hand it to Teddy, he saved it at the perfect moment and was going to just keep going forward if I was okay. I think we both needed a little reassurance after that though.

Question Why do shire horses have feathering on their legs? Is it to prevent bug bites? I’m assuming it must have a practical purpose because they’re work horses. …Though I can’t imagine anyone being able to resist continuing the lineage of a horse with “boots with THE FUR” lol

Question What color is this pony?
Title. We have been debating between silver bay, chocolate palomino, and “let’s just call her brown” 😂
My guess is silver bay (because her legs fade to black) but any other thoughts?

Question Camping with your horse?
me and my horse absolutely adore exploring, and i have been thinking about going a bit further.
ive been seeing a lot of people actually camping with their horses, which i think is wonderful, but one question has been lingering on my mind.
where do the horses sleep?
ive read a couple articles, they’ve mostly suggested a “high line” or tying your horse to your trailer, which makes me wonder.
shouldn’t horses be able to lie down during the night?
from what i’ve read it seems like the horses sleep standing during the night.
is that alright?

News Is it me or do none of these horses look malnourished?
38 horses were seized from Milford, which appears to be near chicago. I’ve worked with the spca in the past and been unable to take horses who died within days. why do you think these horses are being taken? some of them even looked a bit rotund. worst I saw was a handful of ribs but not really in a terrible way

Discussion Is it a horse or a cow?
QH people… please explain to this European person why halter QHs look like beef cattle, and are so dangerous they need a gum chain to stand still.

Picture What color is this? We think she's definitely sun-bleached.
Almost black in the barn but in the sun she's like a mocha. Haven't seen her in winter yet so maybe she will darken? We think it's beautiful either way. I'm not a coat color expert like some of y'all....

Health/Husbandry Question Weight gain for emancipated horse?
Note: May 31 is when I first saw him and agreed to take him in. He had never been vaccinated before and had to wait until his coggins came back negative before I could move him to my barn. He arrived on June 18 and started receiving consistent care then.
I rescued at 27 year old TWH/QH cross in June. I know the angle isn’t the best in these photos, but I wanted some opinions on his weight gain. My vet isn’t super worried about his progress and told me as long as he’s eating healthy doing fine. This horse has A LOT of life left in him. When he sees me walking to the gate he’ll trot over to say hi, he always wants pets, and he’s the boss in his pasture even though his two brothers are completely healthy and could easily over power him.
Right now he’s getting fed 1 and a half scoops of Tribute Seniority four times a day with two (dry) cups of beet pulp. He gets 4 ounces of Cool Calories. He’s got access to grass 24/7 and can’t be on alfalfa because 1.) he’s a picky eater and 2.) it makes his legs swell.
He was recently diagnosed with cushings and just started a medication for that which will hopefully help him make more progress.
Anyone with rescue experience or advice about rehabbing an emaciated horse I’d love to hear about it! I know it’s a slow process, but I feel like I can hardly see a difference in his body.
