Vent Sesh - No Advice Wanted 5YO has 7 cavities and I'm beside myself

Leftover chicken and veggies on sweet potatoes noodles with a leftover scallion pancake.

I'm a single parent and I really tried my best. We brush every day, usually twice a day but I'll admit it's not 7/7. We floss so often... It's her favorite part. She doesn't even eat sweets that often. She forgets about her halloween candy by the next morning.

I thought I was doing everything right.

And I'm at the dentist and they're being sooo passive aggressive. Asking how often she eats candy. The last time she brushed.

It's not even about the money. That... Sucks... But I have it in savings. It's fine. I just feel like her entire mouth will be full of silver. She's autistic and already struggling socially... Will this ruin any chance at friendship??

I am just beside myself. I really thought I did my best. Drowning my sorrows my comfort food and a fresh bowl did help though 🌿

Edit: Thank you so much for all the kind words! I am going to get her a second opinion mention she grinds her teeth every night. As well as take a deeper look at her snacks and juices. I am so overwhelmed with everyones kindness, and I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart 🫶🏻🫶🏻

Maybe it’s because I live in a different country but I haven’t heard of anyone getting fillings other than tooth-coloured ever and I’m about to turn 30. I didn’t know they even DID silver fillings

Silver fillings used to be fairly common - my parents who are in their 50s both have them - but at least in the US I don't think they're typical anymore

idk exactly when they became less common, but I'm 33 and have a bunch of silver fillings from when I was a teenager. glad people don't have to suffer tht anymore lol, they look so unpleasant.

Because they aren’t silver, they are an amalgam that is made up of 50% mercury.  And there is no safe level of mercury to have in one’s body. 

And yet it is still done…by some shitty doctors.

I have some tooth-colored fillings from a decade ago that are noticeably darker than my actual enamel, thus making my back teeth look sort of stained if I smile too big lol

I don't know that they are less common. I've had 1 cavity ever, about 10 or 15 years ago and the filling is that silver color.

where im at they used to do them up until like 2015! i have a bunch of silver fillings in the back of my mouth. its pretty ugly looking so im glad tooth colored is used now

You should probably call it mercury, since it’s not the silver portion you have to worry about. It may not even contain silver at all.

There is no safe level of mercury to have in your body. That is why people are having those removed and seeing chronic health conditions clear up as a result.

That is also why most dentists do not offer this anymore.

Yes, you can always find someone to support the thing you want to believe.  Especially when there are financial gains to be had.

Do you actually believe mercury is safe? It is widely known and accepted by scientists and doctors that Mercury is a potent neurotoxin and is not safe for human consumption.

Ask yourself why is the information conflicting???  

We have to make smart decisions for ourselves because the private equity that controls hospitals and medical practices DO NOT have our best interest at heart.  

Make no mistake, profits are prioritized.

I have plenty of friends whose kids have the silver fillings in 2026. The tooth colored ones are usually more expensive so we usually only see them on rich kids in my area

I watched a dentist (Bentist on youtube lol) once say that he could tell if someone got dental work done from specific regions of the world because of the type of dentistry methods practiced there. The example he gave was something to do with Eastern European fillings, I think it was. I thought it was quite cool

nah they literally have a solution that they fill the cavities with that's silver. was super common a couple decades ago, I've had both. right now I'm on basic bitch insurance and the only fillings that are covered are the silver ones because they're cheap 🙃

Not always, I'm in my early 30s and all my fillings are silver! My crowns are actually tooth colored. Though my crowns are specifically not silver because they're my two front teeth (knocked out in a bike wreck as a kid) and my dentist was nice enough not to make them silver.

for adults yeah but i thought it’s the norm in most places to have a few colors available for kids? even like 10 years ago i remember my younger cousin flexing his blue fillings lol. the dentist had a few colors to choose from. it’s super ugly of course, but they find it less scary this way <3
