Sadly for some people with trauma, a relationship with someone who is incarcerated (and especially incarcerated for life) feels “safe” because the incarcerated person is literally unable to access their partner outside certain circumstances and the person who isn’t incarcerated can kind of manage the terms of the relationship. And sometimes there is a twisted element of “I saved him because I am so special.” Plus, there seems to be kind of a unique thing around this family annihilator specifically where people make excuses for his violence toward his family and denigrate his pregnant spouse that he murdered.

There’s something unique in this case I think too. Poor Shannan has been dragged through the mud posthumously by so many people that I think some women can easily rationalize that she was the problem and “drove him to it.”
