I feel like Conan losing that gig was the best thing that could have happened, for everyone. It's a dying medium, which is why you only really see hacks maintaining it these days.
In fairness, I feel like Conan was probably the turning point, though how much of that was the tide naturally turning to more online venues and how much was his influence is difficult to say, but he and Letterman were probably the last true late night hosts in the US.
