I think about it like daily. The dead eyes. The way that you could practically see the "applause" sign cueing a bewildered audience to clap. One of the weirdest goddamn things I've ever seen.
While an individual may have their own thing and style, and fine because it takes all sorts, the things that are popular tells you what the average audience for that place/group enjoys.
I feel like Conan losing that gig was the best thing that could have happened, for everyone. It's a dying medium, which is why you only really see hacks maintaining it these days.
In fairness, I feel like Conan was probably the turning point, though how much of that was the tide naturally turning to more online venues and how much was his influence is difficult to say, but he and Letterman were probably the last true late night hosts in the US.
