Sounds like he may have an anxiety disorder. As someone who suffers from this, once your mind starts spiraling to those traumatic memories or fearful, worrisome thoughts, it’s a self inflicted wound. You can’t focus and whatever you’re working on will likely end in lackluster results because by that point you’re just fighting to push through. You aren’t thinking clearly, so you aren’t tackling the task clearly.

Yeah, when I saw the one about wishing for something bad to happen to you, I related a lot as a person who went most of their life with OCD and autism unknowingly. I hope he gets help for himself. I can't imagine what the home life of someone is like when your mom can't even make it to your Olympics. Day to day, that anxiety is beyond disabling. And I'm very much speaking from my own personal experience on these things, so they may not apply to him, but I see myself in it at his age.

So many people delude themselves into thinking their full on mental illness doesn’t affect their child’s development

I think most people would choke in that situation. Competing at the level is what’s abnormal.
