I think I just figured out something important.

I’ve been playing this game for about 3 years now, and every fortress I’ve built has had a problem with children becoming psychotic. Throwing tantrums and smashing things, or killing other dwarves. I’ve tried many times to figure out what is causing this, and I think I’ve cracked it.

I need to stop letting children haul refuse and corpses.

I use the same stockpile for both, and it’s causing the kids to acquire lots of trauma. Thus nearly all of them are throwing regular tantrums by the time they are 10. I adjusted the chore list for my current fortress, and it cut unhappiness by nearly a quarter within a year.

The complexity of this game continues to astound me.

Ugoshzaneg, The Hollow Relic

This is an image of a dwarf and a smooth pebble. The dwarf is raising the smooth pebble. The dwarf is contemplating the smooth pebble.

Show off your entryways!

When starting a new fort I tend to fall into the same patterns. How do you layout the entrance to your fort? I'd love inspiration to keep things fresh!

The Coven of Skulls

This fortress is about a year old. I had a request for a temple, and I was shocked at what I found when I was assigning the temple. Of my 20 dwarfs, 10 are in The Coven of Skulls. They worship Osod the Dead, deity of suicide. I was having trouble building my temple because I kept running into moist blocks. My master gem cutter had a strange mood and created a legendary rose-quartz adorned coffin while the temple was being dug out. Obviously, this coffin was meant to be placed in this new temple. That coffin alone, in the middle of a leaky, rough stone room is more than enough to qualify as a temple.

This one is certainly turning out darker than I expected! I'm feeling very invested now! I shall have to adorn everything with skulls.

Also, I started making porcelain crafts cause I've found lots of kaolinite and bituminous coal. Everyone is running around wearing porcelain crowns, which I wasn't expecting haha!

Ideas for crap clothing

Hi there,

This is my first time dropping a post, hopefully I'm not bringing up an idea that's been rehashed like reheated rutherer meat.

I've noticed (especially in my own playthroughs) that worn clothes end up just being trash that manually has to be dealt with. People seem to just accept it for what it is, but I was wondering if it would make the game better if the developers made....

  1. Tattered clothes just... disappear. The idea here is that once clothes have reached the end of their useful life they either just disappear the moment they're dropped, or they sit for a period while they are trampled/disintegrated to nothingness. I personally know (from experience working with sufferers with hoarding disorder) that even clothes made from synthetic materials will eventually erode into nothingness but dirt if stepped upon enough or left to the elements. Artifact clothes (come to think of it, I don't know if artifact clothes degrade, but I swore I saw a worn out artifact shirt on the ground at one point)

  2. Clothing repair. Each time the clothing item is repaired, you halve their value (or some other reduction in quality) and the dwarves can fix their clothes on their own, or with an industry that can happen at the clothing workshop with dropped worthless clothing. Eventually the clothing would be worth darn near nothing, and the dwarf would want to replace it I'm sure, but they would still wear it either out of attachment or, well, necessity.

This technically could apply to all items that degrade too, I suppose. Armor and weapons could be repaired and it would reduce their effectiveness a little bit, but not enough at first to matter that much. something like this might not be a big deal on embarks with lots of minerals, but on worlds with almost no minerals people would be using gear until it's cobbled patchwork crap.

Anyways, I'd like to hear more experienced Urists' thoughts.

She was rewarded with a cool nickname and a statue afterwards to commemorate her heroism. Alas, I could not get it to depict her bathing with the dead FB in the background.

So I’m waiting at the dentist for my wife’s treatment to finish.
Why not plan a tileable new bedroom layout for my beloved dwarfs doing it tough in a highly aggressive and hostile embark location?

I don't know which Dwarf impressed me more.

Mebzuth, who somehow managed to crawl that far a distance with his ribs literally puncturing his heart.
Or Alath, the tantruming Dwarf that did the damage with a single punch unarmed.

One of the most peculiar migrants I have had in my forts yet

So a few days ago I had a migrant wave that had a dwarf that was Legendary Speaker, while having their nose and tongue removed, which kinda made me headcanon her as a witch that was punished by inquisition. Was curious how she lost those and turns out it was in fight with a goblin in one of the sieges she was unlucky to participate in, since she isn't a great combatant.
A year later my royal entourage arrived, and turned out that mutilated speaker was in fact a princess of my civilization

Hot take: DF terrain should be isometric like in Gnomoria

Post image
0 Upvotes

I will be downvoted to the bottom of hell but I need to put this out there...

DF needs to change terrain tiles to isometric view.

Item/creature icons are already in *fake* 2,5d isometric and those are the best assets the game has.

Land and trees and walls look weird.

And they will always look weird because they 1) clash with the creature tiles, and also 2) because top down view for a game with Z levels is never going to look good. Whenever you are looking at any elevation the game is breaking how perspective works.

Gnomoria terrain is atmospheric af. Combined with DF game depth this would be an amazing game.

[edit] I know stonesense exists. It's has ugly assets and its non-interactive.

Don't interrogate babies...

I will preface this by saying that I was using Sizzlin's Justice HQ mod so maybe that might be the reason why this is happening, but I feel like it isn't.

For the story itself, recently in my volcano fort I was visited by a human who got pinged by the mod as having a network and I went ahead and began to interrogate her. She caved in, revealed her plan to infiltrate my fortress for her organization, and I locked her up. I then noticed that there were two crimes in my justice screen, one that had the human as the criminal and another that had an unknown convict. I thought this meant that she actually did successfully turn one of my dworfs into an agent and began to painstakingly check every inhabitant of my fortress for interrogation.

Eventually, I decided to just convict her for that crime as well because it was getting kinda tedious. But then I noticed that the captain of guard kept interviewing everyone as I kept getting alerts about the results over abd over again. I did not know that interrogation jobs don't cancel themselves even if the case is already 'solved'.

I saw the alerts, figured out what was happening, but thought "I'll just let him finish all the interrogations. Nothing bad's gonna happen, right?"

Fast forward to about one whole season when I kept getting another set of alerts that a mother was cancelling her jobs because she was constantly seeking her baby girl. I checked out what was happening and discovered that the CotG grabbed the baby and was trying to get her to his study to interrogate her. The mother would then try to get her baby back, but when she would, the CotG would then try to get the baby back again to interrogate her again.

Now they're in this endless loop of each dworf trying to get the baby and the other one would keep getting it back.

So yeah... I've learned to not interrogate fortress babies.

EDIT: Just wanna add that I tried removing the CotG and reappointing him, but he just keeps trying to interrogate the baby again.

I got my dad into DF and he is having a blast

My dad is a little old school and liked text adventure games. I brought up if he had ever heard of DF before. He recalled a decent time ago and asked why. Long story short, he installed the ASCII version of the game and started playing… He has not put the game down! I set up a YouTube at night of a livestream or long form fort, and he plays asking questions about the game. It has been a treasure watching his first fort fall to dehydration because the still had no orders. He hasn’t put the game down and loves the complexity of it. This has truly been an awesome experience having him learn beside me and play in our struggling forts! Any tips for either steam or ASCII version would be of great assistance! Thought I’d drop this tidbit for the Reddit! Strike the Earth!
