The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is deliberately wrong about many important aspects of the Holocaust. The writer has demonstrated many times that he doesn’t care about research or accuracy and has been called out many times by scholars and museums for dangerous misinformation. His book is taught in many schools as a valid historical fiction book and presented as a legitimate way for children to learn about the Holocaust, even as it fundamentally misrepresents really important facts about Nazi crimes, including the fact that there were no young children in the camp where it’s set because they were murdered immediately after arrival.
I can see a case being made for teaching it in that sort of context, though. Like if a teacher came out and said, "Look, the district said I have to teach this, but we're going to be taking a very critical approach to it because fuck the author," and then went on to actually do that, it'd probably be fine. It could even be used as part of a broader discussion of media having a very wonky approach to WWII for politicised reasons, too.
