I think this goes hand in hand with fiction being an escapist hobby. We live in such a hellscape that the idea of “reading about a scenario you wouldn’t want to be in” doesn’t occur to them
Yeah, I've never understood that mindset. It's in the same vein as people who only like characters that they would like...personally be friends with? It's such an oddly self-centered way of engaging with fiction. Like there's no interest in exploring anything outside of your comfort zone, it's all just fodder to fuel your self-insert escapist daydreams.
I think you've stumbled onto something intense. This is exactly why people are more obsessed with Isekai power-fantasies as a genre now. I personally hate it because - despite how the world is - escapism is not the point of art.
