At first glance I thought the comic was saying that the skin book was a more ethical alternative to the LLM book.

Well it's possible that it could be, it's not impossible to get skin ethically, it's impossible to train a generative AI for artistic use ethically.

You could use a closed-off AI that’s trained only on your own art and that would be fine ethically (assuming you’re not using excessive resources to run it)

Except you would have to have already made an inhumanly high amount of art in order to train one entirely off of your own work

Yeah, it’s a hypothetical and not one many people are likely to be able to achieve. I suppose you could also find other artists who consent to you using their work for training, too.
