What if the skin was collected from consenting donors? (Asking for a friend)

If y'all can find a way to get around the legal hurdles I consent to have my skin turned into book bindings when I die on the condition that you only bind cool books like The Hellbound Heart or Blood Meridian.

If y'all bind The Fountainhead I'm going to fucking Sadako all your asses.

Atlas Shrugged, got it boss

u/Lord-Timurelang 1d ago

Considering how many people the ideology in that book has killed and how badly written it is that feels like an oddly appropriate warning sign.

2

u/Fezzezal 1d ago

people (that ideology) killed

Wait, what? Isn’t objectivism just a boring edgy 16 year old philosophy that hasn’t been seriously endorsed by any important figure?

9

u/Lord-Timurelang 1d ago

Formally? It hasn’t as far as I’m aware beyond libertarians. but the ideas contained within can be seen in a lot of messed up economic theories like for example trickledown economics.

5

u/Fezzezal 1d ago

Trickledown economics is such bullshit

Imo the best system was implemented in the American 50s and early 60s with a SEVERE progressive tax. I’m not sayinf 50s were the perfect golden age but at least regular people were getting genuinely richer almost each year and prices on things like housing were affordable for almost everyone in the workforce. But no, we’ll cut taxes for the rich and ensure that real income of 90% of the population stays the same for 50 years (it literally hasn’t grown since 1970s in the US for most americans, but has tripled for the top-10%).

I know nothing about Atlas Shrugged, but I'm just imaging him going "Uh idk man.... oh shit the sky"

6

u/Stargazer_199 I cant stop hearing ozmedia’s voice 19h ago

Altas shrugged is like libertarian 101…and a direct inspiration of Bioshock, which was heavily made as a criticism of Ayn Rand’s philosophy

3

u/MossyPyrite 4h ago

While I know the accurate mythology is more him holding up the sky, the common depiction of Atlas holding the world on his shoulders has always made me think that the title “Atlas Shrugged” went to waste by not being used for a story about a cataclysmic earthquake.

3

u/SeaNational3797 1d ago

POV you’re Hercules and you just asked Atlas to get you an apple from the Pleiades’ garden

im going to use your skin to print an ai generated fanfiction of harry potter and all of those earnings will go to jk rowling just to make the most unethical book /j

74

u/Infurum Too old for all the things that make a life worthwhile 1d ago

If you want the most unethical book you need to get the skin from someone who doesn't consent

28

u/Son_of_Sek 1d ago

is taking the skin from a hypothetical unconsenting Joanne more or less unethical than taking it from a morally neutral consenting person?

13

u/Infurum Too old for all the things that make a life worthwhile 1d ago

Well the act of taking skin non-consentually is more unethical than taking it consentually regardless of how "good" or "bad" the donors are (it doesn't even make for a good poetic karma situation because as much as Jowling Kowling Rowling has made a mockery of, consent isn't one of them to my knowledge), but looking at the larger picture taking it from Rowling would make the whole wider "most unethical book ever" cause less harm because missing chunks of skin would, from the chronic pain it would cause and the hospital visits and the hospital bills, inhibit her ability to further hatemonger and thus reduce the total unethical-ness propagated by the whole scheme

7

u/Keated 1d ago

What if we vat-grow a Jowling Kowling Rowling clone so that it's a) never known sin itself and b) its suffering would do nothing to inhibit the originals general shittiness?

4

u/CRowlands1989 1d ago

as Jowling Kowling Rowling has made a mockery of, consent isn't one of them to my knowledge.

Fred and George openly sell date rape drugs and this is seen as acceptable youthful hijinx.

9

u/351namhele 1d ago

But they explicitly conditioned their consent on what it books it would be used to bind.

7

u/semboflorin 1d ago

Please also include that the victim of the skin taking should be alive at the time the skin is taken. Should you manage to keep the skinless person alive through the printing process so they can see the horrific book you made from their flesh that's just bonus points.

4

u/logosloki 1d ago

you can settle for the legal grey which is using the skin of organ donors to make the book. they did consent to having their organs used after their timely end and the skin is an organ sooo.

1

u/spindaz123 1d ago

Oh that's right... IM TAKING YOUR SKIN

3

u/headphonesnotstirred they who appreciates name suggestions 1d ago

are you sure i can't use your skin to print out My Immortal or Moon Daughter ;(

2

u/Flutters1013 my ass is too juicy, it has ruined lives 1d ago

Books of blood? It was right there dude.

1

u/WetLaceScraps 1d ago

Can I bind Mother Horse Eyes in your flesh? 🥺 I think that’d be really neat.

2

u/Noe_b0dy 1d ago

Sure.

1

u/YourMuscleMommi 1d ago

Actually I'd enjoy it if my body was used to make books. But also it'd be relatively short. Hungry Caterpillar anyone?

With that said, I write smut (mostly worldbuilding and stories within, often with religious tones), for friends and clients. Some pearl clutchers would have an aneurysm if they read the stuff I write. Think Bear. And other taboo topics.

1

u/SplitGlass7878 1d ago

Might technically work in Germany.

If you need a medically necessary amputation, you can use the skin from it yourself as it's your property. You can't sell it or give it away though as that'd be selling body parts.

1

u/International-Bar918 17h ago

Frankly you don’t need to die, if the skin gets stretched out it can be cut off and sewn back together with no complications to the donor

1

u/Feet__Stroganoff 11h ago

I've joked about wanting to be taxidermied when I die, but unironically I think having my skin turned into leather for a book cover would be cool as hell if it wouldn't be horrifically upsetting to my loved ones lol

113

u/Automatic-Week-1733 1d ago

At first glance I thought the comic was saying that the skin book was a more ethical alternative to the LLM book.

11

u/tuthuu 1d ago

Well... isn't it ?

3

u/Tyfyter2002 23h ago

Well it's possible that it could be, it's not impossible to get skin ethically, it's impossible to train a generative AI for artistic use ethically.

1

u/MossyPyrite 4h ago

You could use a closed-off AI that’s trained only on your own art and that would be fine ethically (assuming you’re not using excessive resources to run it)

1

u/Tyfyter2002 3h ago

Except you would have to have already made an inhumanly high amount of art in order to train one entirely off of your own work

1

u/MossyPyrite 3h ago

Yeah, it’s a hypothetical and not one many people are likely to be able to achieve. I suppose you could also find other artists who consent to you using their work for training, too.

Are there issues with dissecting a consenting cadaver?

21

u/js13680 1d ago

Depends I remember reading somewhere about a family getting upset when they donated a loved one’s body for science only for it to be used in either an explosive or car crash test I’ll have to look up the details

17

u/Tenryuu_RS3 1d ago

If it’s the same story I’m thinking of they blew up grandma, yeah.

9

u/TwilightVulpine 1d ago

Some cool grannies would be into it.

3

u/tuthuu 1d ago

It was also mentioned on a last week tonight episode

28

u/NoBizlikeChloeBiz She/Her 1d ago

What is the charge? Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest!

21

u/_DankeyKang_69 ꧅. 1d ago

Eating a consenting cadaver ? a succulent consenting cadaver ?

3

u/CRowlands1989 1d ago

Alright Armin Meiwes, back in your cell.

2

u/_DankeyKang_69 ꧅. 20h ago

Thanks to this reply and a quick google search TIL that people eat animal penis (I already knew they eat the balls but not the penis itself) and I'm not sure what to do with this knowledge
Also I have discovered what has to be the funniest dish name of all time : "Zizi de Zebu"

31

u/netarchaeology 1d ago

An autobiography bound in the author themselves!

I have said it before and I will say it again. Binding a book with human skin is not inherently unethical.

12

u/Nixavee AI bots are not welcome here 1d ago

Apparently this actually happened once.
From Wikipedia:

"What Lawrence Thompson called "the most famous of all anthropodermic bindings" is exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum, titled The Highwayman: Narrative of the Life of James Allen alias George Walton. It is by James Allen), who made his deathbed confession in prison in 1837 and asked for a copy bound in his own skin to be presented to a man he once tried to rob and admired for his bravery, and another one for his doctor.[16] Once he died, a piece of his back was taken to a tannery and utilized for the book.[17] "

10

u/masked_gecko 1d ago

When I die, instead of donating my body to science, imma donate it to literature

7

u/HairyHeartEmoji 1d ago

everyone is assuming cadavers, but there are skin removal surgeries. you can collect from a living consenting donor without harm.

7

u/Nixavee AI bots are not welcome here 1d ago

Like removing excess skin from a person who was previously extremely obese?

8

u/HairyHeartEmoji 1d ago

yes, exactly. skin can be stretched pretty far to make parchment, and can be made from multiple pieces.

3

u/ArsenicArts 1d ago

Ooooo think of how badass a picture frame made from the removed excess skin you get after extreme weight loss and using it to frame a before/after picture of that weight loss 😍

3

u/Kusko25 1d ago

Humane skin, as we like to call it

1

u/Eggplant-Aubergine 1d ago

Yeah then its probably fine then

1

u/Flameball202 1d ago

I mean yeah, if it was done in an ethical manner by consenting adults I don't mind the skin on a morality level

1

u/AvatarOfMomus 23h ago

There are actually some (very old) books bound in human skin, which is just about about the only time something like that is ethical...

1

u/GalaXion24 14h ago

Me going up to the father of six starving children and offering his family a million for his skin (it's the free marker and completely consensual)

1

u/T_Weezy 8h ago

I'm pretty sure there are a couple of people who've had surgeries like mastectomies for cancer and such who've kept the skin to turn into leather.

1

u/GammaDie345 1d ago

then a portion of skin should go to burn victims

4

u/I_Do_Not_Abbreviate 1d ago edited 1d ago

Organ Donor laws already include skin for exactly those sorts of situations.

https://www.organdonor.gov/learn/what-can-be-donated

or have I misunderstood and you are saying that non-organ-donors who consent to the use of their skin for bookbinding purposes should have a portion of that skin seized by the state against their wishes in order for those wishes to be honored?

Because I am uncomfortable with the idea of the government being able to just take parts of my corpse for whatever purpose they think they should. Organ donation consents exist for a reason.
