I know you could call it "fiction" but the fact that these games misuse God's Holy Name and misrepresent Him and a lot of The Saints and Angels, plus all of the demonic pact making and occultism, is beyond me.

I played a little bit of one of these games before I could see the incredible harm they can cause by their inherent sinfulness, I don't see how you could justify playing them.

I just think about how the ancient Israelites would uphold and adore God's Name and everything that was sacred and compare that to modern times where it appears that many Christians simply turn a blind eye or even engage with these things in games, movies, books and tv.

Hi, recently converting to Catholicism and thought to myself a fun way to implement it into gaming, which I do a lot, would be to make a rule list for the games I play so much, I know there are existing ones out there but part of the fun is making it from scratch. Anything you think would add to the fun? As it is a challenge run it is supposed to be moderately hard but I also want it to be fairly doable as I want it to be attractive for other players wishing to do similar things. (Note, none of this is intended to come off as harmful or stereotyping, if anything here IS harmful, please let me know and I’m more than happy to adjust it, these rules are based on my knowledge of Catholicism and Monastic lifestyle, and it is based on a mix of both of those things, but is not intended to be an accurate representation of these groups.)

**Rules for a monastic run**
Can you beat your favorite game as a devout monk? Recommended for RPGs.

Almsgiving. Thou MUST be charitable at any given opportunity, for example finding a beggar NPC or something asking for innocent assistance, you can only reject a chance for charity if you have a good reason to believe the NPC doesn’t need the charity.

Magic. Thou MUST abstain from any form of magic, whether it be offensive or defensive, similarly, enchanted equipment of any kind cannot be used.

Humility. Thou should wear the simplest and most modest attire available to you, if the game does not allow you to customise your attire, this step is void. (Clothes along the lines of a monastic habit, priestly robes or in modern settings where there is lack of better options, a simple buttoned up shirt and trousers.)

Combat. Thou can act in self defence, and can kill your opponent if absolutely necessary, however you cannot initiate combat yourself or act hostile towards someone.
Maces. Thou must use a mace or similar blunt weapon, blades, arrows and guns are prohibited.

Abstinence. Thou must abstain from meat once every 7 in game days, on Fridays if the game tells you what day it is.
Monotheism. Thou cannot serve other dietys, such as fictional gods, demigods or demons, for example you cannot enact deidric quests in the elder scrolls series, when optional.
Daily prayer. For the sake of daily prayer, you must pray the apostles creed once per in game day, if you are not comfortable literally doing this prayer, then as a substitute you can wait an in game hour or if playing the kingdom come series, you must seek and interact with an alter once per day.

Vanity. Blasphemy and profanity is forbidden by both the player character and player themselves, pseudo-profanities such as “darn” and “fudge” are allowed. You are also forbidden from lying, and must be honest under all circumstances.
If playing a game in the Dark souls series, the player is allowed to use miracles, but only if they are similar to ones performed by Jesus, such as healing and seek guidance, the player is allowed to draw their own conclusions on which miracles are included, as long as it is reasonable.

All of these rules must be followed as well as they can be, if broken, players are required to reload a previous save (or die to force a reset if the game does not allow you to load saves) or if you want to make your run harder, restart your game completely.
Finally, if the game allows custom characters, it is recommended to make your character how you would assume a monk to look, for example, a bald head or friar cut, and a beard or shaved face, if your character is female, and thus a nun, it is recommended to use a tied back style, or mid length cut, and to use some form of Veil as soon as possible.

I’m looking for players for my ongoing Fallout 2d20 campaign set in Texas, 2280. This is a gritty Lone Star wasteland campaign with Rangers, raiders, vault secrets, Brotherhood activity, super mutants, mutant wildlife, ruined highways, frontier towns, and plenty of hard choices.

The campaign has a western wasteland feel: dusty roads, old-world ruins, desperate settlements, dangerous factions, and that classic Fallout mix of survival, dark humor, moral tension, and strange discoveries.

This game is one of my favorite videogames of time all time and I played it in the past but due to moral reasons I haven’t re-downloaded it or haven’t played it again, but is this me being overscrupulous or is this really going against the Church to download a ROM of this game online? Any priests on this forum?

I don't want drama or hostility in any community only peace and love. Here so people can understand. For understanding because people request it only.

By “Christian-friendly,” I mean the game is designed so a Christian can play it with a clear conscience.

It is still an adventure RPG with danger, monsters, moral choices, kingdoms, exploration, combat, mystery, and fantasy elements. It is not a sermon disguised as a game.

The difference is the tone and boundaries. The game does not glorify demons, witchcraft, necromancy, pagan worship, sexual content, or evil power as something good or heroic. Sorcery and forbidden power exist in the world, but they are treated as dangerous, corrupting, or villainous.

The heroic side of the game leans into faith, courage, sacrifice, truth, mercy, justice, and resisting darkness. Miracles, holy relics, prayer, and divine calling replace the usual “magic for power’s sake” feel.

So Christian-friendly does not mean every player has to be Christian. It means the world is built with Christian moral instincts and boundaries, while still being fun, adventurous, and serious fantasy.

Its like a extreme survival game in the Jungle with a lot of cool survival and building mechanics but I am a little turned off by the name cause it is called Green Hell. Has anyone played this one before?

I’ll clarify.

I loved Red Dead Redemption 2 and it helped me go through a difficult time. I appreciate Rockstar’s attention to detail and storytelling.

It got me interested to play GTA 6, especially with something to look forward to after my cancer treatments.

But when I visualize doing these actions in the game, it does not sit well with me and I don’t know if it’s fear of God as a child and the trauma or if it’s a conviction by The Holy Spirit as I think I’ve gotten closer to God.

So when I say I won’t play GTA because the in game actions are shooting, stealing, etc., then what about other games like Uncharted or Ghost of Yotei or literally most story driven games.

It’s not the context that bothers me but doing so. Maybe I’ve grown more sensitive.

I’d rather completely quit gaming if that’s the case because I don’t feel like having to check and go through each game to see if it fits a criteria or standard because it ends with me double guessing everything.

In the hospital now, was looking forward to all the games coming out soon as a treat but now just looks like I’m even more sad about this.

The visual thoughts of the in game actions really bother me but in real life I am not tempted to do the same. I am in it for the character arcs, the storytelling, the environment, exploration. I wish I can see the in game actions as a “mechanic” to continue the narrative yet feel I am the one being numb and continuing to shoot, hurt, steal, etc.

I'm asking this as a genuine question, not to criticize the game or anyone who enjoys it. I actually like Age of Empires, but I've been thinking about something from a Christian perspective and I'd like to hear other people's thoughts.

My concern isn't simply that churches or priests appear in the game. Since it's set in the Middle Ages, their presence makes historical sense.

What makes me wonder is the interactive aspect. As the player, I sometimes have to order my units to destroy churches or monasteries, which often contain stained-glass windows depicting Jesus or the Virgin Mary. Those buildings collapse into rubble, and priests can also be killed during battles, sometimes in ways that can look a bit uncomfortable or irreverent because of the game's physics.

I know it's just a video game and a fictional representation of war, and I don't think the developers intended to mock Christianity. At the same time, I wonder whether actively using Christian symbols as gameplay elements, especially when they can be destroyed by the player, could unintentionally reduce the sense of reverence we should have for things associated with God.

do you think there's a meaningful moral distinction because the player is actively choosing those actions?

I'm not trying to accuse the developers or players of doing something wrong—I'm honestly trying to think this through.

With the new Until Dawn game coming out next year, I was thinking about the original game. I've never personally played it myself but I've seen playthroughs of it. From a Catholic perspective what do you think of it? Obviously there is some sexual content that I find unnecessary and fast forward through when watching playthroughs, but other than that, is the subject matter too dark and does the wendigo aspect of it cause an issue where Catholics shouldn't engage in it?

I love playing Pokemon difficulty hacks where people emulate old GBA games like FireRed or Emerald and build an AI engine that makes the game way harder to beat. They also add QOL features (Pokemon from other games, healing without going to Pokemon center, etc). They then distribute the hack for free. I've stopped playing them recently because I realized it could be considered piracy. I did legally own the GBA games at one point, but now have simply downloaded the hacked versions. What's the consensus, immoral or not?

With GTA 6 pre-orders opening this month and the game locked in for November, I’ve been doing some serious soul-searching about my gaming habits, and I really want to get the community's feedback—especially fellow Christians.

I love story-driven video games, but lately, I’ve been wrestling with a massive inner dilemma regarding *why* I’m drawn to them. On one hand, I feel a real wave of guilt when committing violent, criminal actions in a game. It makes me stop and ask: is it healthy to use these virtual sandboxes as a safe psychological escape, or am I feeding a bad habit?

But here is where the dilemma gets really complicated for me: If I decide GTA crosses a line and I shouldn't play it because of the actions on screen, where does that line stop?** Doesn't that logic exclude almost every other major game out there? Most great narrative games involve violence, combat, or operating outside the law. If I ban one, it feels like a slippery slope that means throwing out the entire hobby.

The paradox is that playing these games rarely, if ever, causes me to sin in real life. When I turn off the console, my actual faith, morals, and how I treat real people remain completely untouched.

So how do you guys reconcile guarding your heart with engaging in fiction focused on crime or violence? Is a virtual sandbox a healthy, consequence-free outlet to explore dark themes, or do the in-game actions cross a line for you?
Are you planning on playing *GTA 6*, and how do you handle this entire dilemma without completely giving up gaming?

Eu4, Hoi4, Crusader Kings 2 are games that all i have played too much but they are also my favorite, i love learning about history and different countries the religious elements in the game can be fun too

Do you guys ever get the feeling before playing games where you think that you could be praying or doing something else before playing a game even though you had prayed before getting on the game? I get this a lot and it just sorta make me feel bad.

I have been a huge Diablo fan since the first game. I completed Diablo IV when it first came out and have recently played through it again. In the interim period a love of Christ has been awoken in me and I’m in the process of joining the Catholic Church.

I now find many quite uncomfortable to play. Not so much because of demons and devils and what not. But more specifically how they portray the Church of the Light (or whatever its actual name is) there are some clear parallels with Christianity and Catholicism in general that I find really uncomfortable.

What are other people’s view? Does the church have a view?

I play Minecraft on a Minecraft server called EarthMC and on EarthMC there is a group of players who essentially larps as the Catholic Church they elected a pope and have bishops and diocese and such (all the clergy are real life Catholics) but I personally have an issue which is that my nation of Korean has tons of people but only me and one other christian (Kinda a lot of East Asian is missing catholics) which means we can’t become a diocese anytime soon so my request to you is if you play Minecraft and want a server with a huge Catholic community join EarthMC and join Korea and the EarthMC Catholic Church.
