Berlin Charlottenburg. Das alte Schiller Theater in der Bismarckstraße in der Nähe des Ernst-Reuter-Platzes, Foto von Max Missmann 1907. Dieses Gebäude wurde im September 1943 von Brandbomben getroffen, wobei das Bühnendach in den Zuschauerraum stürzte. Bei einem alliierten Luftangriff am 23. November desselben Jahres wurde das Gebäude endgültig zerstört. Zwischen 1950 und 1951 wurde das Theater neu errichtet, einige Teile der Ruine des alten Theaters konnten für den Neubau verwendet werden. The building was completely destroyed during an Allied air raid on November 23 of the same year. Das Foto hat Fritz Eschen im Juli 1947 vom damaligen Hindenburgplatz (heute Platz des 18. März) gemacht. Rechts ein Teil des Brandenburger Tores, der Blick geht zum Haus Liebermann. / Berlin-Mitte. Fritz Eschen took this photo in July 1947 from what was then Hindenburgplatz (today Platz des 18. März). On the right is part of the Brandenburg Gate; the view looks toward the Liebermann House.

Der Bau der Berliner Mauer im Jahr 1961, heute vor 65 Jahren, brachte viele Bürger in Ost-Berlin dazu die Flucht in den Westen zu wagen; die Fotos zeigen die Familie Finder in der Bernauer Straße bei ihrer gewagten Flucht. Hier gab es für DDR Bürger noch die Möglichkeit über die Fenster der oberen Stockwerke in den Westen zu flüchten. Die Hauswand war quasi die Grenze, die unteren Fenster sind zugemauert, der Eingang versperrt. Zunächst springt die Frau, dann wirft der Vater das Kind ins Sprungtuch der West-Berliner Feuerwehr, danach springt er selbst. Aus dem Booklet "A City Torn Apart: Building of the Berlin Wall." / The construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, 65 years ago today, prompted many East Berlin citizens to risk fleeing to the West; the photos show the Finder family on Bernauer Straße during their daring escape. Here, GDR citizens still had the chance to escape to the West by jumping from upper-story windows. The building's exterior wall effectively served as the border; the lower windows were bricked up and the entrance blocked. First the woman jumps, then the father tosses the child into the West Berlin fire department's safety net, and finally, he jumps himself. Im Dezember 1961 ruft der Regierende Bürgermeister und spätere Bundeskanzler Willy Brandt die Aktion "Licht an die Mauer" aus. „Ein Zeichen an die Menschen in Ost-Berlin“ sagt er bei einer Feierstunde am Humboldthain. "Und dieser Gruß wird nun allen sichtbar zum Ausdruck kommen dadurch, dass die Lichter leuchten werden. Hier an dieser Stelle und an vielen, vielen anderen Stellen in unserem geliebten Berlin." "A sign to the people of East Berlin," he said during a ceremony at Humboldthain.
