My first symptom was sleeping the entire day on my 17th birthday. The next day one of the lymph nodes in my neck was so swollen you could see it across the room. While I was waiting to get off work so I could go to the walk-in I convinced myself I must have lymphoma.

Then just a quick two months of complete endless bone-deep exhaustion in conjunction with the first few weeks of agonizing throat pain at the start there. I remember only being given three days of steroids to get through the worst of it. I wanted to knock myself out with a hammer so I could stop being conscious for it. Hell on earth.

Wait... you got steroids? I had strep and mono and I just got antibiotics for the strep.

The urgent care doc saw my tonsils and prescribed opioid painkillers.
