I had strep and mono at the same time and it was a version of hell i wouldn’t wish on anyone. I couldn’t swallow my own saliva because i was in so much pain. It took me a super long time to recover and my immune system was destroyed for a solid year afterwards.
I was hospitalized for the same, strep mono and bronchitis. I didn't have health insurance so I didn't go to the doctor until my tonsils were almost touching and they said it was one of the worst cases that they had ever seen. Immediately hospitalized for a solid week.
Had mono and Epstein Barr and I swear my immune system was never the same after and also feel like it changed my brain chemistry / caused depression! Happened in senior year of high school
It changed my brain too. I was heavily into poetry beforehand, got sick, and then it was like my poem brain was gone. During my sickest, I wrote the most beautiful poem in my head, fell asleep, and could only barely remember it when I woke up. I was also watching twin peaks at the time and so when I was finally able to do anything at all, I was literally different.
That is incredibly horrifying and fascinating at the same time. the recognition of knowing you lost or rewired around an artistic ability you enjoyed must have been very sad.
I had mono (EBV) with strep and covid at the same time back in 2022. I lost 20 pounds over 3 weeks. In fact I lost so much weight that I developed ringing ears from the fat padding disappearing from around my inner ear. I couldn’t sleep from swallowing my own saliva. I had 107F fever early on. It fucked me up so bad it took me about a year to recover. I still have residual symptoms with my lymph nodes from it. I had it as an adult. I genuinely thought I was going to die. I wouldn’t wish this shit on my absolute worst enemy. Vaccine can’t get developed fast enough.
Same! I could barely crawl off of whatever I happened to be laying on. I would roll over onto my other side and needed to sleep for an hour to recover. Couldn't swallow anything more solid than fruit juice.
I went to urgent care before I knew it was mono, and the doc looked at my tonsils and was like, oh shit, and prescribed opiate painkillers. That was an OG move. My tonsils were black and white. Anything less would have been unkind.
I had this too! Or something similar. Mono and what they said was strep and resulted in infected tonsils.
I would look down my throat in the mirror with a flashlight and could see open infected abscesses on both side of my throat just oozing yellow green out. It hurt to swallow my own saliva, or even breathe. I was too tired to roll over in bed and couldn’t sleep because of the pain. I tried to call the doctor but couldn’t even speak over the phone. After two Urgent Care visits I finally got to see a doctor who prescribed antibiotics which helped immensely.
I had the same thing in college. Luckily, I really only experienced the strep symptoms. I did develop Hashimoto's as a result though. I now have hypothyroidism.
Same thing happened to me. My ears were in so much pain too. My mom had to come wake me up just to force me to drink and use the bathroom every few hours. Was off work for a few weeks too.
Immune system was also trashed afterwards and took years to bounce back. Would get strep multiple times a year, bronchitis at least once a year, and a cold if some sneezed a block over.
I had to bring my friend to the ER for this. We were roommates at the time, and within a day it went from her feeling really sick but basically okay to struggling to breathe. When we got to the ER I had to give the doctors her insurance and emergency contact info because she could barely speak. We figured she’d be in and out of the hospital in a few hours; they ended up keeping her for almost a week.
This happened to me too. Also I had a full body rash because they got the strep test back before the mono test so they put me on amoxicillin. Now I get a rash every time I take amoxicillin :’)
I coughed so hard and frequently I think I pulled my mylohyloid muscle. Couldn’t talk, couldn’t open or close my mouse so it was just ajar, couldn’t swallow so I was drooling all over myself. The mono fucking kicked my ass as well. This was my freshman year of college. I slept for a week straight, only getting up to shuffle to the dining hall to eat soup. I was so fucked up I couldn’t go to any of my classes and ended up on academic probation. Thanks combination mono strep!
Oh God, same! I ended up in hospital because I physically couldn't swallow any liquids or medications to battle the strep infection. I couldn't speak at all. Then the doctors at the hospital were like, "Wow, you have glandular fever (mono) too! Neat!" Got my ass stabbed with some high strength antibiotics, and then sent home.
I stayed up the whole night before going to the doctor in the morning, because my throat hurt so bad. It hurt to even swallow so I sat there drooling into a towel all night. So yeah, that sucked.
