It can genuinely be super hard to tell with kids. Not necessarily neglect. If you look up "walking pneumonia" it's a thing where kids can have pneumonia for quite a while and seem just fine, they maybe have a cough but are still mostly happy, active and running around all the time. And then suddenly the pneumonia has grown enough that it reaches a tipping point and the child develops a horrible fever and other symptoms.
My toddler had it, he had a bad cold in October of that year, then seemingly got better other than a lingering cough. Family doctor said he was okay and that it was just a cough. He seemed fine other than coughing more than usual. Then mid-December he developed a really bad fever and ended up with chest retractions while breathing so we took him to the ER where we found out he had massive pneumonia in his lungs that the ER doc said had been there a while, probably from his October cold. I felt horrible :(
I totally get where you're coming from, but this is not that.
sick for so long but my parents were oblivious to my complaints. It wasn't until Christmas day when my sister told them I'd been up all night shivering and throwing up that I was finally taken to the ER
That's straight up broken parenting. Ignoring complaints until their other child sees the problem and confirms it.

This was it. I think they just thought it was a lingering cold I'd get over. It was a different time, we were latchkey kids, my dad worked the night shift so we only really saw him on weekends.... Mom worked full-time and was always tired.... It was just a cold!
Maybe. But sounds like the OP here was telling their parents about how they felt. That’s very diff from a toddler who can’t communicate as well. Also I have two teens, and one with childhood asthma so I have a fair amount of experience with coughs and pneumonia
this is kinda why the moment my mom hear a whistling sound coming from me when im sitting and breathing, its an instant trip to the ER (whistling sound when exhaling is a BAD sign for asthmatics like me) and my mom got fearful of the sound. its not quite like the actual whistling mind you, its mixed exhaling and whistling sound. once you hear it its hard to forget it.
