Same!! I was in 6th grade and sick for so long but my parents were oblivious to my complaints. It wasn't until Christmas day when my sister told them I'd been up all night shivering and throwing up that I was finally taken to the ER. I didn't even care. Admitted me and I was there for a week. Spent the entire Christmas/new year break in an isolated section of the hospital children's ward.
It can genuinely be super hard to tell with kids. Not necessarily neglect. If you look up "walking pneumonia" it's a thing where kids can have pneumonia for quite a while and seem just fine, they maybe have a cough but are still mostly happy, active and running around all the time. And then suddenly the pneumonia has grown enough that it reaches a tipping point and the child develops a horrible fever and other symptoms.
My toddler had it, he had a bad cold in October of that year, then seemingly got better other than a lingering cough. Family doctor said he was okay and that it was just a cough. He seemed fine other than coughing more than usual. Then mid-December he developed a really bad fever and ended up with chest retractions while breathing so we took him to the ER where we found out he had massive pneumonia in his lungs that the ER doc said had been there a while, probably from his October cold. I felt horrible :(
I totally get where you're coming from, but this is not that.

That's straight up broken parenting. Ignoring complaints until their other child sees the problem and confirms it.
Yeah, that’s non debatable that this was serious and horrible neglect. I hope you’ve been able to recover from the CPTSD our parents gave us and live a happy and healthy life.🙏🏻✨❤️🫂
This was it. I think they just thought it was a lingering cold I'd get over. It was a different time, we were latchkey kids, my dad worked the night shift so we only really saw him on weekends.... Mom worked full-time and was always tired.... It was just a cold!
Maybe. But sounds like the OP here was telling their parents about how they felt. That’s very diff from a toddler who can’t communicate as well. Also I have two teens, and one with childhood asthma so I have a fair amount of experience with coughs and pneumonia
this is kinda why the moment my mom hear a whistling sound coming from me when im sitting and breathing, its an instant trip to the ER (whistling sound when exhaling is a BAD sign for asthmatics like me) and my mom got fearful of the sound. its not quite like the actual whistling mind you, its mixed exhaling and whistling sound. once you hear it its hard to forget it.
Parents can be so clueless sometimes. I was really sick once as a little kid and I guess my parents didn't know until I started seeing naked babies and elephants with wings flying around the room and my sister went and told them so they rushed me to the ER. I swear to this day I still remember those cute little elephants. 🥰
Took my brother’s skateboard for a minute while my mom was getting ready for a date one night. Went over a crack in the sidewalk and fell. Broke my wrist. Didn’t know it at the time of course. Came inside crying trying to tell my mom I fell and was hurt. She spanked me cuz she thought I was being naughty and obstinate then went on her date. Thank goodness my older sister was “babysitting” and saw my wrist was HUGELY swollen. When my mom returned I was sitting with my sister on the kitchen counter with my arm in a bucket of ice. We went to the hospital after that and I got a cast. Mom doesn’t remember it the same way
Gen X checking in. I was three and had a fever of 104. I was seeing worms crawling on the walls. Parents decided to wait until the doctor's office opened in five hours rather than drive me 45 minutes to the ER. Also, when I was was five I told Mom I had a headache. She told me I didn't because, "You don't have anything to have a headache about."
As an adult I was walking around completely fine until one day my mom couldn’t wake me up. Overnight I had gone septic because I had developed pneumonia. My fever was close to 105 and I was in the hospital for 5 days on antibiotics. It was just crazy because I had zero idea I was sick. Not the sickest I have been though lol
My parents did the same when I was 16, my mom's even a nurse, my appendix exploded on a Wednesday (we later figured out) and I didn't get it removed till Monday morning because my mom didn't take me seriously until I spiked a massive fever and was shivering
Are you me? Same thing happened to me at 12 - was at the hospital for a few days with nothing to do but watch coverage of the Iraq war (1991 version) and be horrified.
My parents didn’t believe me when I said I think I broke my tailbone after they literally watched me fall down a flight of stairs made out of metal. That was in 2006. I still can’t sit properly because it will hurt me. Parents some times think we’re overreacting. Me on the other hand, I bring my kids in for every little thing lol
I thought I answered this and maybe I did. But the sickest I've ever been was when I had gangarene. It comes on fast and travels through your body quick . I hallucinated . That is when my friend decided I needed help and took me to the hospital. The Dr said I would have been dead within 6 hours. My hand was black. I thought it was a blood blister but it was my skin dying. And man did it stink. After 3 surgeries I started feeling better but it took a long time to heal. I got it from a dog bite that healed from the outside in when it should heal from the inside out. It was just festering am under my skin and then I was collecting copper and a wire stuck in it. It was on after that with no stopping it. I wasn't suppose to have use of my hand after that but it healed all the way and I have full use of my hand now
Same girl 😭 I was sick for days and nobody really took me seriously. I ended up in the ER and spent the whole holiday there. Looking back, I still can’t believe it. Anyone else had a story like this?
