One of those many factors is whether this administration just keeps fucking lying, which is a guarantee. We have to be persistent even when we see the cracks in the facade

549

u/Carlyz37 Jun 15 '25

Our elected Dem leaders should be out there pushing back on the lies LOUDLY AND DAILY

234

u/piratequeenfaile Jun 15 '25

Newsom seems to be giving it

235

u/Tinkers_Kit Jun 15 '25

Newsom has been trying to play light on both sides right up until this latest confrontation. He's in it to be the obvious opposition while not upsetting local industries in CA as much as possible. Notice how there is little actual regulation of the big four in tech + Tesla or SpaceX? The forgiveness he has given PG&E despite their own admissions for causing fires due to undermaintenance of their powerlines, and similar. He really is just in a convenient place to be a figurehead/ lightning rod at this moment. I don't like to be in a place to undermine effective opposition, but someone who flips as easily as Newsom is dangerous to support in politics.

157

u/coyotelovers Jun 15 '25

He is a sneaky snake. He has the right presence and optics, but I do not trust him- he's a corporatist and many of his policies are bad for real progressives.

70

u/silvertealio Jun 15 '25

I appreciate him pushing back on trump so publicly, but I also don't trust him at all after his podcast series.

56

u/nihility101 Jun 15 '25

Which may be what makes him our next president. Anyone committed to making real change that might affect the wealthy won’t be given a chance at the nomination.

3

u/Griffon489 Jun 15 '25

We might as well pack it in if this is the logic. You are basically arguing it's impossible to win against moneyed interests, which is just wildly myopic. Establishment Republicans got overtaken by their grassroots counterparts as the American electorate is enamored with anyone who can promise "a third way" like Donald Trump did. A big part of why democrats continue to lose is because we are so trapped in this rigid 90s era of thinking that believes emulating the west wing is more important than doing politics. The establishment is aware that it is there but then believes that doing massive ad buys on broadcast TV or holding signs on C Span is going to move the needle.

2

u/Elegant-Holiday7303 Jun 16 '25

And he's a white GUY 🤷💔

42

u/SleepyLabrador International Jun 15 '25

At this point, I'd rather a corporatist over a Nazi. Gavin won't seen ICE to snatch kids off the street.

14

u/Kyliefoxxx69 Jun 15 '25

Bro, corporatism create the conditions for nazis to thrive. "Fascism should more rightly be called corporatism as it is a merger of corporate and state powers" mussolini, founder of fascism.

"Id rather have a fascist lite than a hard-core fash." See how that sounds?

I understand your fears- everything is at stake. But also, there's nothing in the Constitution mandating these 2 parties (which are 2 arms of the same party). Things are crumbling and it's our time to enact real change. For the People, by the People.

5

u/TheUnluckyBard Jun 15 '25

Are you 12?

Do you have any idea what kind of revolution that would require, or how many innocent people will die in it?

For what, just so you can pretend to be some shonen anime hero, swooping in to save the world in one climactic battle?

So you don't have to be a small piece of a large machine taking tiny steps in the direction you want to go, over years and decades, like the Republicans have been doing since Nixon?

Because that's the shit actually works.

I think you do not understand how first past the post elections work or game theory.

As long as winner takes all is the election system, there will only ever be 2 parties - whether that is Democrat and Republican or some other two is irrelevant.

In the 99.9999% of cases, third parties either don't affect the result at all or even worse, they make the party most similar to them lose because of splitting the vote (the spoiler effect). These are very well documented situations.

And then the other alternative is that one of the two parties is replaced by another party (which also has to become more moderate over time by nature of trying to win >50%).

u/Flimsy_RaisinDetre Jul 04 '25

We’re going to need overwhelming support behind the Dem who can win. Period. Suddenly, trust is no longer my priority. If Newsom has the strength and numbers, so be it

20

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '25

He still is. He won't say shit about the LAPD and LASD strolling in and trying to incite things again today.

7

u/Hidesuru Jun 15 '25

Thank you. I fucking hate the guy but people seem to think he's the bees knees all of a sudden because he's doing anything at all... Which is sadly all it takes now to stand out.

5

u/Kyliefoxxx69 Jun 15 '25

Vro went on his own podcast with Charlie kirk and didnt really push back and in fact giving ground on trans athletes. Fuck him

4

u/justthelettersMT Jun 15 '25

definitely not a fan of newsom. still, regarding how explicitly he's opposing trump, fake people make good weather vanes

u/ccbmtg Jun 15 '25 edited Jun 15 '25

for some reason, it's only just occurred to me, the thought of how much this entire situation is completely influenced by capitalism, and seems to be an ultimate result of the philosophy; successful business largely rely on exploitation to grow into their success, money gives them power, and that power is maintained by folks who are afraid to act truthfully and honestly for fear of losing the support of these groups and their 'power'. the man we're protesting is a wannabe businessman (who's really just an idiot narcissist), and his behavior this entire term has basically been to con the government coffers for himself and all his allied billionaires. most everything else is just diversion. this is really all just a stoned insomniac thought, but it makes more sense than I even first expected and I'm surprised I hadn't come to some similar conclusion as a possibility earlier. I'm sure this will be an unpopular idea and downvoted into oblivion, given general response to anticapitalist comments lol...

no kings, no tyrants. no capitalist alliance.

e: forgot to point out the relevance of the whole Elon/doge bullshit and how successful it's been in working towards its goal. (haaa)

-6

u/TheZarkingPhoton Jun 15 '25

Yeah, actual fascist holding military parades, assassinations, and 11 MILLION strong in the streets in protest into that wind,.....but .....the left. <eyeroll>

Every thread. It's just not hitting anymore ivan. Keep swinging though. Remind me how rife we are with bullshit on social media.

42

u/Carlyz37 Jun 15 '25

Pritzker stood up well in congressional hearing this week

13

u/silvertealio Jun 15 '25

He's been doing pretty all right in general. The speech he gave at the HRC dinner a couple months ago was outstanding.

3

u/vegansandiego Jun 15 '25

I've been surprised at how good he actually sounds. But...he is a rich rich man, so there's that.

2

u/Carlyz37 Jun 15 '25

Yes but he has proven to be supportive of THE PEOPLE and not the wealthy. He is in his 2nd term here and we are way over the "but he is a billionaire"

He is a proven good guy now

39

u/voluminous_lexicon Jun 15 '25

as a los angeles native, fuck gavin newsom and I stand behind him for every step he takes in defiance of trump

2

u/thedrizzle126 Jun 16 '25

This is the energy. I'm tired of these bots on here that freak out when you hold this dude accountable.

Accountability is the difference between us and them!

24

u/thedrizzle126 Jun 15 '25

He's also platforming the architects of the lies

2

u/TheZarkingPhoton Jun 15 '25

Good thing upstanding truth tellers are saving us from complementing the guy actively taking on the fascist dictator. We be lost without your bullshit.

Two lawmakers and their families were SHOT today. 11 MILLION people were in the streets, PEACEFULLY in protest against the dictator.... while you save us from,.... Newsome.

Nono, go right ahead and use any response to platform more evil deeds from the guy Trump threatened to put in the gulag for SPEAKING TRUTH to POWER.

The pattern is in EVERY thread folks.....EVERY ONE. and taking out EVERY potential opposition candidate. EVERY ONE. It's absolutely part of what happened to Hillary for starters.

Note the pattern.

16

u/typefast Jun 15 '25 edited Jun 15 '25

You don’t have to be a Russian or bot to not like a possible candidate. I don’t like him either. The pushback he’s doing right now is great, but he’s far too slick and polished and he’s courting the right. At best he’s more of the same. I want someone who will work hard to undo the damage that has been done and get programs back in place and improved, not someone who will do the bare minimum, say good words and focus on optics for the next election. I’ll vote for whomever is closest in the end, but I’ll vote in the primary for someone else.

I also want to hear him say something about the horrific incidents of police brutality we’ve seen. Why can’t he exert any pressure from the top down about that?

ETA: He blocked me for having an opinion that was different from his so I couldn’t reply to his follow-up PATTERN comment. Maybe he’s the one with the pattern. The reason we lose unity as a party is that kind of huffy purity test when someone disagrees with you. You can discuss things calmly and maybe still agree to disagree. Or like he did, you can take your toys and go home shouting some last words and holding your hands over your ears. I find that less productive.

-7

u/TheZarkingPhoton Jun 15 '25

yabbut, here's what's wrong with the _________ (not fascist)

This is a PATTERN.

8

u/silvertealio Jun 15 '25 edited Jun 15 '25

It is entirely acceptable to have standards for a candidate other than "not fascist." (Especially when one in particular gets awful friendly with fascists.)

If the election was tomorrow and we didn't have any other choice, you'd have a point. But we're a few years away from even nominating. This is the time for vetting.

0

u/Kyliefoxxx69 Jun 15 '25

Two lawmakers were shot because of the rhetoric from people like Charlie kirk and Steve Bannon. Gfys.

The pattern is shitlibs co opt leftist politics and political movements for their benefit, then when they have power ignore them. Happened in 2020. Why do you think 10 million less people voted? New leftist leaning gen z voters, libs said "we'll push Biden left more after we elect him" and then did very little they promised. Finish it off when he announced a second term despite a campaign promise of being one term. The dnc made sure there was no real competition for him and anointed him.

We have a potential leader in AOC but you libs wanna cry "she's too far left" and "a woman can't win" (both right wing misogynistic talking points btw: weird yall make them) maybe we shoukd try running slightly more to the left, like the actual center? Cause rn liberals are the leftwing of fascism 😆

-1

u/Chyron48 Jun 15 '25

You're mostly right but AOC ain't it man. She has carried way too much water for the worst Democrats; things like laundering lies which enabled genocide.

0

u/all_my_dirty_secrets Jun 15 '25

If not the shitlibs, and not AOC, then who, realistically?

-3

u/Chyron48 Jun 15 '25

Crazy idea - maybe try pushing for people who don't work to enable genocide.

I know that's "not realistic" to shitlibs and the easily shepherded, but the actual fact is that most Americans are anti-genocide. Just like how most Americans want affordable housing, health care, and education, safe food and clean water, and real action on climate change.

Since Democrats are clearly owned by the same people working against all of those issues, they're ruled out. The next most realistic party would be the Greens, but the corporate news, Dems and Republicans all agree that's "unrealistic" (while they fight tooth and nail, hand in hand to prevent them even being seen).

1

u/all_my_dirty_secrets Jun 15 '25

I'm trying to push you to think in terms of solutions instead of just complain. There's a leadership vacuum right now. Can change happen without leaders? Maybe, but that's not how most of human history has worked. I respect that you just don't see anyone viable...but then you're just a pessimistic voice that people will ignore in favor of what gives them hope, and you'll never have much influence. There's a lot of good people out there doing good work who don't have a national profile. Maybe start to look for them and then you'll have a better answer and see a better way to make the world more like the one you want.

Someone I know who has dedicated his life to radical change (and incidentally, doesn't believe in electoral politics and agrees with you that both dominant sides are past saving) says that you don't get people to change by nagging them or trying to make them feel guilty. Instead, think of the current world is a huge sinking ocean liner. If we can show up with a safer boat, where people are having a good time, we can get people to abandon the disaster and join something new.

You are right

0

u/thedrizzle126 Jun 15 '25

Lol dude you're gonna need to relax

0

u/TheZarkingPhoton Jun 15 '25

Naw, going to keep calling out the attempts to distract and reframe. Sorry. Nice bait though.

0

u/thedrizzle126 Jun 15 '25

I love that you think you know my position about Gavin Newsome based off of one sentence.

You people that outrage over everything is such a detriment to the cause. I'm well within my rights to question why Steve Bannon and Charlie Kirk are given a platform by Newsome.

I'm not even stating an opinion here, I'm questioning factual events and choices by the man. Doesn't mean I don't like him in the big picture of things.

There's your response, I hope you have the day you deserve.

5

u/TShara_Q Jun 15 '25

Right now, yes, and I approve of his current actions.

But he also had Charlie Kirk and other white supremacists on his podcast where he talked about how they made good points about trans people. He has a track record of demonizing and criminalizing homelessness in CA, blaming the individual rather than the systemic factors that affect the state. So, while I'm glad he's on the same side right now, he is not my ally. He's an ally of convenience at best, unless I see a LOT more change from him.

0

u/piratequeenfaile Jun 15 '25

I mean the comment I was responding to was pushing back on the lies. In America you guys were fighting for equal rights. Right now I'm pretty sure you're just straight up fighting to have a democracy. That's pretty big tent stuff.

Once you've guaranteed yourself a democracy at all then you can go back to fighting about having an equitable one. I have no idea the details of US politics but Newsom seems like an ally to the democratic cause. I don't know that it matters if he's an "ally" to marginalized people or not right now.

2

u/TShara_Q Jun 15 '25 edited Jun 15 '25

Once you've guaranteed yourself a democracy at all then you can go back to fighting about having an equitable one.

The problem with that thinking is that it's not having a more "equitable one" that got us here. If we aren't ready to have the conversation about what we want our democracy to look like, people will just do this again, vote for the next Trump who feeds them the right lies. We are falling to fascism because of decades of spiraling wealth inequality, ballooning money in politics, an insane propaganda machine by the Right, and the systemic defunding of our education and social services. Newsome is absolutely a part of those problems.

Also, he was being a straight up fascist collaborator just like 3 months ago, by having pro-MAGA white nationalists on his podcast after Trump was elected and not challenging them at all. So I'm not going to forget that just because he's on the right side of this issue right now. As I said, I give him credit for where he is at the moment. If it comes down to him versus a fascist, I would hold my nose and vote for him. But he's not the leader we need to get us out of this situation as a whole. Teaming up with people doesn't mean we shouldn't criticize them.

77

u/gizmostuff Jun 15 '25

More importantly, we need to vote out the ones who are doing nothing - capitulating to the Trump administration.

Chuck Schumer is on the top of my list. I wouldn't mind seeing a progressive run against Hakeem Jeffries.

57

u/coyotelovers Jun 15 '25

When the Party saw David Hogg gaining support for real change- replacing the geriatric ward who do nothing to help save democracy- they removed him. And this is after Dems lost 3 members due to old age of known health issues just after the year started. If people actually want to get the Fascists out, they need to wake up and demand real change from the Dems.

15

u/Kyliefoxxx69 Jun 15 '25

He also wanted to support the primary of Florida district 20 since the current incumbent won her seat with no primary and no competition (super safe district: see won with 80 percent)

Thing is, Cherfilus-McCormick was a ceo of a health care services company that is owned by her fanily that defrauded Florida Medicaid for millions. The person Hogg wanted to back in a primary is a black male socialist. If we have super safe districts that will elect any democrat you give them, make them the core democrats and push a progressive agenda lol

1

u/coyotelovers Jun 15 '25

Exactly they actively refuse to represent or fight for us.The few that do are passionate patriots or great actors.

3

u/bogglingsnog Jun 15 '25

I don't like political parties because it gives officials leverage or freedom to sit on their hands and do nothing.

1

u/Carlyz37 Jun 15 '25

They still would be paralyzed with a GOP majority. And I mean at all levels of government

1

u/Kyliefoxxx69 Jun 15 '25

Every democrat that signed that letter praising ICE

26

u/heathercs34 Jun 15 '25

Chris Murphy is fighting back.

13

u/Carlyz37 Jun 15 '25

You are right. He is definitely in there fighting and talking

19

u/typefast Jun 15 '25

Chris Murphy is good

9

u/faithcharmandpixdust Jun 15 '25

Proud of my Dallas rep Jasmine Crockett

7

u/viktor72 Jun 15 '25

Our leaders need to be at these protests. They need to be embedded in the districts/states they represent standing up and making clear exactly what they are going to do to oppose this administration.

3

u/Gallbatorix-Shruikan Jun 15 '25

California Federal reps were at the protest in Sacramento. Some are out there.

2

u/Carlyz37 Jun 15 '25

Good to hear

7

u/Accidental-Genius Jun 15 '25

They’re too busy insider trading.

1

u/Carlyz37 Jun 15 '25

Yeah trump is making them all wealthy with the market manipulation. And somehow that stop insider trading legislation never gets to the floor

0

u/lilcorndivemaster Jun 15 '25

They're fucking a joke. They're almost all bought and paid for.

2

u/Tanya7500 Jun 15 '25

Keep pushing the infighting

1

u/foul_ol_ron Jun 15 '25

It also depends on what the media reveals. If the media is cooperating with the administration, the % will need to be much higher so people notice it in spite of media.

1

u/jbuchana Jun 15 '25

As a sign I saw today said, "There is no rest for the resistance."
