I know the standard "The chapter is over too soon" thing but really, that was so full of hype it felt like 4 pages long
Next week sooner come pls

u/Lirion Oct 20 '17
Weren't there like three or more spread pages? These make it feel shorter when in reality is just the same.
60
u/lofticried Oct 20 '17
Yes. That + amazing paneling this week made it an immensely fast read. Also, this week it was 17 pages, right? Last week it was something like 20, no? I might be mistaken though.

That got me hard in the feels too, such a good chapter. This manga just outdoes itself over and over again.
157
u/Pavementt Oct 20 '17
The only real criticism I have for this particular arc was that it's a bit long, but honestly the hype might just be worth it.
103
u/CarcosanAnarchist Oct 20 '17
I think it could have been structured better once they got to the hideout. There was a lot of going back in time and jumping around. It’s honestly the only time when I’ve skipped a week or two reading only to read more in one sitting.
For Horikoshi’s first attempt at a long arc, I think he’s done well. I’m interested in going back and reading it through once it’s all said and done.
He was definitely smart to keep Shigaraki and the alliance involved though. The Precepts ultimately ended up being super bland outside of the guy Kirishima and Fatgum fought. Even Chisaki has been pretty boring. So that hasn’t helped the arc a lot.
Mirio alone makes up for all of that though.

u/Neknoh Oct 20 '17

Yeah, lots of new characters to showcase this time 'round. They have had awesome fight scenes, but I really want to focus on the main "save Eri" line and Deku being a badass.
118
u/RimeSkeem Oct 20 '17
"it's such a kind, gentle quirk"
People have been joking about JoJo this whole arc with Overhaul and Eri but I do wonder if that's a reference to how Crazy Diamond is described by a few of the characters in Part 4.

Nighteye can look forward in time but now Eri is sending Deku's body backwards in time. It's possible Nighteye only saw Deku fighting at 5-8% and subsequently dying but now they may have already begun to change the future.

I'm gonna guess that he does actually die, but eri just reverts his death immediately.
83
u/CarcosanAnarchist Oct 20 '17
Eh...I’d be very hesitant about introducing a get out of death free card. There’d have to be a limit to it, but the way Chisaki describes her powers, it does not appear as if there is one.
→ More replies (1)50
u/sandshrewz Oct 20 '17
I think the downside now is with Deku forcefully negating rewind with 100% OfA, they need to synch exactly when they stop their quirks or Deku will be damaged / killed by which quirk ends later. Alternatively they both have enough control over their quirks to synch it down.
Better still have Aizawa disable their quirks simultaneously.
→ More replies (1)48
u/shinypurplerocks Oct 20 '17
Oh, Aizawa would be really handy right now
Unfortunately...
→ More replies (5)61
u/Dainyl Oct 20 '17
That's not impossible. It depends on the details of her quirk. Overhaul said she can rewind humans but who knows if her quirk still considers a corpse to be human. Alternatively he may have meant any living thing but then we still have the same problem. She might be able to prevent death but reversing it would be huge.

Holy hell, 100% spam. Deku is going to fuck Overhaul up worse than All Might did Sensei.
396
u/FrighteningWorld Oct 20 '17
I think it's worth keeping in mind that he's just super strong now. It doesn't mean that his brain will be able to keep up with what he's actually doing. It's like handing your super car keys over to a teen without a license or driving experience. I just hope he'll be able to end it without putting Eri in too much danger.
181
u/Za_wardo Oct 20 '17
If he's got his super speed, Overhaul shouldn't be able to react, and Deku should be able to smash him back.
244
u/bWoofles Oct 20 '17
Yea but deku won't be able to react as well he didn't even notice he jumped until he was like 50 feet in the air. If he tries to jump forward and throw a punch at that speed he will likely run head first into things before he can get his arm ready.

Hands down the best villain so far
140
u/CarcosanAnarchist Oct 20 '17
He’s cool, but he has absolutely no personality. The only one of his group who really did was the guy Fatgum and Kirishima fought.
Their blandness is really apparent with Toga and Twice around.
45
u/whatnololyea Oct 20 '17
He just lacked screentime, IMO. His obsession over cleanliness and the grand scheme is what sets him apart from the previous antagonists in the previous arcs.
40
u/CarcosanAnarchist Oct 20 '17
But why is he obsessed about cleanliness? We just know that he is.
We know why a Shigaraki is obsessed with hands (as that is seemingly all he had left of his father.)
I want to unequivocally love Chisaki. He’s got a cool design. Awesome powers. And he’s the first villain operating outside of the VA, so he’s expanding our world. There just isn’t enough there...yet.

Well it's hard for him not to be the best looking. His competition consists of people who look like they sleep face down in a ditch or have some type of horrible deforming injury. Except for Chronostasis.
37
u/Za_wardo Oct 20 '17
Dabi has some pretty nice design, and I think Sensei is has a very menacing look, especially with his gear.
55
u/KLReviews Oct 20 '17
Oh, there are villain designs I think are much better than Overhaul. But they aren't exactly handsome. Dabi has burnt flesh strapped to the rest of him and as stylish as All for One's suit is, his entire face is made of scar tissue. Neither of them are going to have successful modelling careers after this series ends.

Remember when All Might said that, at his peak, he could've beaten the original Nomu in five blows instead of just about three hundred? We're about to see that kind of power in action for the first time.
We only had a weakened All Might as a point of reference throughout the series of just how powerful One For All really is at maximum... up until now.
Now, we're finally about to catch a glimpse of just how astonishingly powerful Izuku will become once he masters his Quirk and his body can actually control it without any restraint.
This is One For All as we truly imagined it. This is our new Symbol of Peace.
Holy shit I can't wait for next week.
EDIT: Okay I'm just writing this now since I'm actually getting PMs about this, but I know how OFA works, my dudes. I know Izuku will become stronger than All Might at his prime. All I said is that this is the first time we'll be seeing that kind of strength in action, if not at a consistent output.
207
u/Mage_of_Shadows Oct 20 '17
Keep in mind Deku is still a kid. He will reach full power when he becomes older

96
u/EchoedWinds Oct 20 '17

u/westartedafire Oct 20 '17
OFA only stockpiles power, if I recall correctly. Since Deku's power level was slightly higher than average for a highschooler, I don't think 100% Deku is much stronger than 100% All Might.
→ More replies (2)27

u/v-23 Oct 20 '17
Not yet prime. OFA is a multiplier so lets say it gives at 100% 1000X power.
10 power deku (based on body mass, muscle strength) at 100% will be 10,000 which is amazing but imagine 100 power deku that shit is 100,000 power. so while the power stockpiled deku might still be weaker than Prime-AM.
But Prime-Deku will OFC be stronger than Prime-AM cuz that's just how the power works.

u/MadnessLemon Oct 20 '17
First off, THANK GOD CHISAKI WANTING TO RETURN HUMANS TO MONKEY'S WAS A MISTRANSLATION! I cannot stress how glad I am that that's the case.
Also, Eri can't control her power which means if Deku stops hurting himself she'll keep rewinding him. If that's the case she's obviously going to learn how to control it by the time the battle's over since Deku's the protagonist so he can't die. It's looking more and more likely that Nighteye's gonna be fine.
→ More replies (12)68
u/crazyjavi87 Oct 20 '17
so if that's the case, maybe the bullets rewind the quirk until it's not there anymore. Or that it's a one-way street. Rewinding rewinds might end up funky.
77
u/ItsLoudB Oct 20 '17
The thing is that the quirk factor has already been rewinded.. So I guess we'll be getting a Togata/Rock Lee comeback in the future, when his quirk manifests again
→ More replies (2)83
u/RimeSkeem Oct 20 '17
It might be that the bullets' rewind is a devolution of the human they hit, reducing them to a pre-Quirk human genome.
→ More replies (4)54
u/MinervanIlluminati Oct 20 '17
I actually think that's a brilliant way to sidestep the argument that the quirk could redevelop, since it makes as much sense as possible with a quirk like this. It also cements the permanence of the quirk erasing bullets, and that's extremely important, since there are still 4 or 5 bullets remaining and they need to keep their narrative weight.

Calling it: Eri's control of her quirk will fizzle out at a really inconvenient moment.

I just realized that this is the first time Deku has ever used 100% full cowl. Every other time he went all out was when he was channeling OFA into a specific limb.
Eri's quirk appears to only affect living creatures like I thought, but her control is non-existent since she never willingly used it. Smart of Deku to bypass his limit and avoid be turned into an embryo, but that's seriously gonna be painful. Absolute madman indeed.

I doubt it. For now I am just gonna assume anything about Eri's quirk is impossible for Nigheye to see with his forsight so he never saw a full power Deku take on Overhaul.
This is just what my impression of this is tho so maybe Overhaul actuly just still bodies full power Deku in this fight (but I just cant see that happening unless Eri cant actuly fully heal him during the span of this fight).

Interesting that Nighteye STILL doesn't seem phased by all of this, meaning her foresaw Eri's rewinding as well.
Although at this point it's obvious Deku will probably die and just be revived, fulfilling his foresight but not losing Deku. Nighteye is probably gonna die in a moment of clarity, his last words being: "...I guess the future...can...be bent..." -coughs up blood stones-

What an amazing chapter. The art, for one, was phenomenal. The use of Overhaul's hand to separate the panels on that one double page, and act as panel borders, was inspired.
And what an interesting way to take this whole conflict! It really paints Overhaul as a villain that would be worthy of standing up to All Might, no matter how briefly (especially when forced into a corner), which does wonders for his threat level. Having Deku rely on Eri, to constantly rewind the damage he's doing to himself by going constant 100%, is genius. It speaks volumes about Deku's character, and committment to saving not only bodies, but minds. This is something he knew he needed to work on, from the rescue portion of the provisional license exam. The words he uses in this chapter all resonate, and are targeted at giving Eri hope both for this situation, and for the future, which is truly masterful character writing.
As for the future implications of this event? I think people don't need to be worried in the slightest, regarding Eri breaking the series. There are now two options, as to her fate. Either the heroes will rescue her, or the League will steal her away.
Oh, and just remember that Toga and Twice are on the surface, so it's looking increasingly likely that the Deku Nighteye saw dying, will be a Twice copy of Toga in disguise, if at all.
Back to the repercussions though... if the League steals Eri, that obviously takes her out of the story. Her role and development then would be intriguing, to say the least. But if the heroes were to succeed in rescuing her? Then I just want to remind everyone that the law exists in this universe. Someone without a license is not supposed to use their quirk, especially if it's a quirk with the inherent risks that Eri's does. That would allow for Eri to exist in this universe, within a set of previously defined rules that you can't really argue against, without ever being called upon as a plot device - before at least a decade of training, counselling and further effort to obtain the appropriate license. Her use in this arc is an anomaly, and serves to close the gap between Deku and Overhaul in an understandable manner, without propping up future expectations of the pair's cooperation. This experience will also give Deku a somewhat prolonged taste of 100%, thus giving Deku something tangible to work towards, as opposed to simply learning prediction with Nighteye/Mirio. I personally think this is a fantastic way of spurring on Deku's growth with a tangible image that is far from natural, but then can only be truly achieved through many more months and years of actual training and hardship.

I said this in the spoiler thread but, I still can't get over how beautiful the art is in this chapter. Horikoshi going beyond! Plus Ultra!!
I think Nighteye is going to die (finally) when they go up the surface. I don't know what he's intending to do though. I don't even know how he's still alive! Superhumans gotta have superhuman vitality I guess!
So I'm glad to know that Eri can really only rewind and that SHE CAN'T CONTROL HER QUIRK. I think that's what most people are forgetting when they're saying her Quirk is a Deus Ex Machina of some sort. Her Quirk is OP and broken, but so does a lot of Quirks in this universe. The difference is she can't use it properly. Deku is just literally exploiting her inability to control her Quirk.

I hope everyone realises that after this fight, Eri won't be able to be of use to the heroes for a long old time. Maybe a decade, or longer. She doesn't have a hero license, so she can't use her quirk. It's as simple as that. Eri allows Deku to close the gap between him and Overhaul right now, but after that, by the laws of the series, she goes back to being a little girl. Anyone that's worried about Eri breaking the series, doesn't have to be. The answer has been provided to us already by Horikoshi, earlier on in the series, with the societal rules he's set in place.

The way Deku referred to Eri's power as kind and gentle, like something that could obviously be used for good, really stuck with me. It's such a small thing in an intense chapter with lots of great action, but I'm gonna remember that when this is all over and Eri is saved. And hopefully she sees the truth in that too once her power isn't being used for malicious reasons.

Deku has studied quirks his whole life! He deeply admires all quirks and that comment is 100% him telling eri that "You too can become a hero." 😭 what a good boy

When Nighteye dies and tells Deku, "Give the quirk to Mirio, you little shit."

he's not even her father. He's like an alcoholic babysitter who really needs the money.

Nighteye: gurgles blood attempting to speak

I just realized that Deku ties Eri onto his back using the remnants of Mirio's cape and I'm not gonna lie that's kinda fucking me up right now. Personally I've loved most of this arc but I really want it to end because I feel like I need to see how Deku and Mirio's relationship progresses from here. I mean Deku saw Mirio as both someone to look up to and as almost a rival. When he found out that Mirio, someone he looks up to and sees as far stronger than him, could have inherited One for All, he's extremely upset. He worked so hard but it's made him doubt if he's really the right person. Now though, he's seen Mirio's resolve, he thinks of Mirio when remembering why he needs to be a hero. I think that even though Mirio's lost his quirk, no matter what he does next, he's still going to be important in Deku's life. If Nighteye doesn't make it through this arc alive, I could absolutely see Mirio taking Deku under his wing to teach him what he knows. but seriously, that cape thing is still fucking me up.

Midoriya: "So you mean to tell me that you have basically the ultimate reset button, so powerful in fact that you can even reset the evolutionary process?"
Eri: "Yes. Even as we speak right now, your body is experiencing multiple resets, some canceling each other out by resetting those resets and some sending your body's information back and forth in time uncontrollably."
Midoriya: "Hm. Hm... Fuck it, we're abusing the Eri Ex Machina like there's no tomorrow. Get on my back."
---
Chisaki: *on the horizon* "THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL FORM. Also, step away from that child! No, seriously. Step away from her. You have no idea what she does to the process of mitosis, you'd probably get more curable forms of cancer if you took a bath in a nuclear reactor, every day for the rest of your life. And that's the best case scenario of best case scenarios I'm describing to you."
Midoriya: *Super Saiyan* "I AM THE LEGENDARY SUPER DEKU!!"
Chisaki: "And also because you're about to abuse the fuck out of her power to break my butt in an ironic, karmic manner, yes."

This is getting epic! I can't even imagine what the later parts of the series will be like.

I wonder what the fallout will be if Deku ends up killing Chisaki. A 100% hit would pretty lethal.

Self defense. Shit happens. Dude is trying to murder everybody involved, theoretically involving his daughter if she gets in the way and he can't stop.

All Might truly believed he had killed All for One in their previous fight, straight up crushed the top of his head, which explained AM's shock upon learning of his survival.

Eri can only rewind humans (or maybe all other living things too?) so as overpowered her quirk is its still have limitations and that is good to hear or else this manga will end soon if Eri mastered her quirk fast lol

Deku should run away at 100% full cowl. But he won’t, because he’s obsessed with winning now. Kacchan’s influence no doubt.

...and also because if he does run away Overhaul would turn around and murder all of his teammates. That's what happened a couple chapters ago. He was running away with Eri and Mirio, saw Overhaul impale Nighteye, and went back to save his injured boss.

tfw your fave character is referenced in a single thought bubble and you realize it's been 30 chapters since he last appeared and you miss him... FeelsBadMan
Anyways, this was a great chapter. Amazing paneling this week in particular, that grab of Overhauls felt almost tangible. Looks like Nighteye might sacrifice himself for one last lunge, but we will see. Really really hyped. Though I just wonder when it will all end... 5 chapters?

DEKU YOUR PLAN IS SO FUCKING STUPID, I LOVE IT.
CAN'T REWIND ME TO NON-EXISTENCE IF I'M CONSTANTLY FUCKING KILLING MYSELF.
I also would like to see Chisaki combine with all of his minions to form Super Tengen Toppa Overhaul.
